Bill, that is true. I was the highest student ROTC member in Detroit and was thrilled to get an offer from West Point. But I knew medicine is what I wanted to do. So I applied to only one school. (it was all the money I had). I applied to Yale and thank God they accepted me. I often wonder what might have happened had they said no.

He said he only applied to one school. Even though one is appointed to the academies, one still has to apply and go through a lengthy set of interviews etc. Sounds like he was encouraged to apply but didn’t. That’s not actually an “offer” to be a cadet but an offer to apply.
One cannot confuse the offer of a nomination by military officials with being offered a slot by West Point.

If Carson was in high school at the time, he would have been in JOUNIOR ROTC. Has anyone tried to verify that he had lunch with Westmoreland, and that he was in fact the best JR ROTC cadet in Detroit? Someone should do that, and see if that part of it is even true.
If that’s true then the Politico piece is a dishonest distortion of the facts. Looks like they are starting to fear/hate Carson the way they fear/hate Trump.

More exciting to me, General William Westmoreland (very prominent in the Viet Nam war) attended with an impressive entourage. Afterward, Sgt. Hunt introduced me to General Westmoreland, and I had dinner with him and the Congressional Medal winners. Later I was offered a full scholarship to West Point. I didn’t refuse the scholarship outright, but I let them know that a military career wasn;t where I saw myself going.

The Carson defenders are unreal, all because the story is from Politico. Carson at best embellished. I believe he knowingly lied. As a service academy graduate, they do not fling “scholarships” around. The entire process is long, drawn out, requires an appointment from a congressman or senator and you most certainly know when you receive an appt. It’s a big deal and they trot you out to your congresscritter or senator for the dog and pony show. Still have my picture with Bill Bradley. In fact, the Army even denies that Westmoreland was in Detroit when Carson said he was. So yes, I believe Ben has knowingly peddled a false story for years.

I just don’t see that, it seems more like splitting hairs.
This whole thing reminds me of the rigorous vetting that was done when Barack Obama first ran for president, with so many questions about his background being thoroughly examined by the MSM.

It looks to me like he’s only guilty of a poor choice of words. He should clarify that he was offered the chance to apply for a slot, not that he was offered a slot.
The fact that he plainly states he only applied to one school (not West Point) is the key point here. It refutes the notion that he’s been claiming he was accepted by West Point, since he didn’t even apply to them and says as much. But his wording was unfortunate, I’ll grant that.
I think you've got it right. And to a young person, an encouragement could certainly be taken as an "offer".
I'm not a Carson fan, but I'm nevertheless disappointed by all the attacks Carson is taking for this, from all sides.

He did hedge what he said by stating he only applied to one school (how do we know that's true?) so by that second statement he negated the first one.
What it sounds like is Dr. Carson writes whatever narrative suits his purposes, and in this case the two narratives collided.
I guess it is appropriate to compare Dr. Carson's ethics with those of Bill Clinton.
POLITICO verified that Westmoreland attended a banquet in Detroit honoring Congressional Medal of Honor winners.
I don’t know that anyone has verified his JROTC rank.
