From the Herald archives: Rubio charged personal bills on GOP card (2010)
Miami Herald ^ | 2/25/10 | BETH REINHARD AND SCOTT HIAASEN

Posted on 11/05/2015 1:37:29 PM PST by jimbo123

U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio charged grocery bills, repairs to the family minivan and purchases from a wine store less than a mile from his West Miami home to the Republican Party of Florida while he was speaker of the Florida House, according to records obtained by The Miami Herald/St. Petersburg Times.

Rubio said Wednesday that he paid for all personal expenses billed to an American Express card given to him by the party to use from 2005 to 2008, when he left public office. The rest of the charges, he said, were legitimate party expenses.

Those expenses include a $1,000 charge at Braman Honda in Miami for repairs to the family car in January 2008. Rubio said the minivan was damaged by parking attendants at a political function and that the party agreed to cover half of his insurance deductible. The party also paid $2,976 for him to rent a car in Miami for five weeks, according to the records provided by a confidential source.

-snip-

Donations to parties must go exclusively toward influencing elections under IRS rules.

Records show Rubio sent payments to American Express totaling $13,900 for his personal expenses during his tenure as House speaker. But those payments were not made monthly. He made no contributions to the bill during a six-month stretch in 2007, records show.

Charges covered by the party as political expenses include:

- $765 at Apple's online store for "computer supplies."

- $25.76 from Everglades Lumber for "supplies."

- $53.49 at Winn-Dixie in Miami for "food."

- $68.33 at Happy Wine in Miami for "beverages" and "meal."

- $78.10 for two purchases at Farm Stores in suburban Miami.

- $412 at All Fusion Electronics, a music equipment store in Miami, for "supplies."

The GOPe has a real dilemma.

Jeb is not catching fire. Neither is Cristie, Linda, Carly or Kaisch. Rubio is their only back-up choice left who is polling in the double digits and he may get flushed by these scandals.

It is too late to bring in Romney at this point, even if his wife allowed it. They could try recruiting Paul Ryan, ba haw haw!

Hannity calls Rubio a conservative but his positions are Lib on Moral and Social issues

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize gay marriage in all 50 states, Rubio offered a disappointing response acceding all power to the Court and advocated moving on from defining marriage as one man and one woman. “While I disagree with this decision, we live in a republic and must abide by the law. As we look ahead, it must be a priority of the next president to nominate judges and justices committed to applying the Constitution as written and originally understood.” (Rubio.Senate.gov)

Rubio told CNN that he did not believe in restricting access to abortifacients including the so called “morning-after pill.” This comment shows that he does not believe that life begins immediately at conception as these types of drugs are under intense debate in the medical community if they can affect implantation of the zygote. (CNN) (Life Site News)

Rubio missed the chance to stand up for the unborn, when he skipped a vote on a continuing resolution that contained funding for Planned Parenthood until December 11, 2015.

Rubio voted against reforms to the NSA mass surveillance program intended to address privacy concerns

Rubio’s honesty is questionable when in Spanish he says he is in favor of Amnesty, and on Hannity’s show he is a borders first conservative.

Rubio’s use of his State Senate CC for private use is well known, its an honesty issue.

Me thinks Rube has a similar problem as does Heb with Columba’s spending habits. Seems these Latino women love to spend on bling.. JMHO.

Rubio faced a very vicious attack on Ingrahams show expressed by a former confidant whos name escapes me. She seemed flustered by the lack of specifics.

I heard that interview this morning.

Her guest gave several specifics including a hotel bill for $10,000
that Rubio paid with the GOP Credit Card.

Does Rubio not know the difference between a personal expense
and a business expense?

Wow, seems as if the lefty MSM is aiming to sabotage Rubio's presidential candidacy by digging up "dirt" from the past. Could it be that they're a little uneasy about his recent debate performance and a slight upward movement in the polls? Could this story have been re-run now at the request of the Jeb Bush campaign? (Recall the back and forth between Jeb and Rubio over the Sun-Sentinel article during the last debate.)

Surely, if Rubio were a Democrat and charged these expenses to the state 'Rat Party, this would wouldn't see the light of day.

No matter what one thinks of Rubio and his candidacy, it would appear as if:

(1) There is little reason for the general public to be offended by what Rubio is alleged to have done here, unless you were a contributor to the Florida GOP, whose account Rubio is alleged to have used improperly. He did NOT use state taxpayer funds.

(2) The amounts alleged to have been charged to the state GOP are very small by political standards. If the aggrieved party wanted its money back, I'm sure that they could settle their differences with Rubio quickly and quietly, if they haven't already done so.

This story is a tempest in a teapot. Very old, nothing was there.

Charlie Crist tried this crap on Rubio...it didn’t stick.

Rubio may be in need of criticism, but this credit card story is bullcrap.

http://theconservativetreehouse.com/2015/11/05/more-research-on-candidate-marco-rubio/

Much more here. I think it may be from the vetting process for Mitt’s VP in 2012.

It is more than credit cards. It is also getting a a line of credit on his mortgage for $135,000 on his new house. He bought the house for over $500,000 but then it appraised higher than the purchase price and he took out a line of credit. The only problem is that the bank did not use comps close to the house because they were in the range of the purchase price. Instead they used comps from a mile a way. Also, the bank was lobbying for lower real estate taxes at the time.

“Inflategate” is a bigger scandal than this garbage about Rubio.

Rubio has about the same appeal to the base as Jeb; regardless, it’s likely that ALL attacks on Pubbie candidates originate with Media Matters or other Hitlery-related org.

Maybe he’s being mentored by Michelle O.

Agreed, as I posted earlier. Do you think that the Jeb Bush campaign is responsible for re-opening this non-story out of desperation now?

It probably was the Yeb! campaign.
Young Yeb! is outpolling his mentor.
The Cheap Labor Express money is starting to gravitate towards Rubio.
The most important thing to them is making sure we can’t elect anyone who would stop them.
