A new report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has some troubling news for the United Kingdom: its health care system is one of the worst in the developed world for cancer survival rates.
While access to care is "generally good" the quality of care in the UK is "poor to mediocre" across several key health areas, obesity levels are "direâ and the NHS struggles to get even the "basics" right, the report said citing a lack of investment over the last six years.
Britain was placed on a par with Chile and Poland as countries still lagging behind the best performers in survival following diagnosis for different types of cancer. The UK came 21st out of 23 countries on cervical cancer survival, 20th out of 23 countries on breast and bowel cancer survival and 19th out of 31 countries on stroke.
[...]
While survival after hospital admission for heart attack and stroke is improving it is "worse than many other OECD countries" including Canada, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, the 220-page study said. The UK is ranked 20th out of 32 countries on heart attack deaths.
Despite these statistics, the NHS remains a point of pride for many British citizens, and was even featured prominently in the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
It's likely that one of the reasons why the UK's cervical cancer survival rates are so low is that women are not offered cancer-detecting pap smears until the age of 25. Buzzfeed reported last year about a woman who died from cervical cancer after being told she was "too young" for a pap smear. She was 24 when she began exhibiting symptoms, yet was denied a screening. This practicing of rationing off care may save the government money, but it clearly isn't saving lives.
RACIST!
Just practicing my progressive imitation!
But that can’t be. All liberals say that single payer health care is the best in the world. /sarc
If the access is good but the care sucks then what good is the access?
Oh boy. I work for a company that is very European bent. All the top people here are from Europe and they hate America, they make it very clear.
Well its been an education for me. The English especially hate us.(Now hold on you Brits, my brother in law is from the UK and just became a Citizen, loves this country so I know its not everyone just this group) Oh their Country is so much better than here! And they have all kept their citizenship. One man raised his son here but he is a british citizen who hates America.
They are still pissed off that America broke from UK. My screen saver is from the Patriot Post it shows all our documents along with the American flag. Declaration of Independence, Federlist papers, Constitution so beautiful!
The VP from the UK came over and said to me what is that are you in the NSA or something? I said NO I am Patriotic!
I have a huge American flag behind me at my cubicle. Now I have to be concerned? I do need my job. Shame on these people!!
that is why monopoly's are banned(except for gov) cause they have the power to eliminate competition.
C’mon. Who doesn’t want DMV healthcare?
Ours is ugly terrible
It's unrealistic to expect individuals to make the right medical decisions for themselves. Government has the resources and dispassionate benevolence to make the right choices for you.
Now, go eat your margarine. Trans fats are good for you.
Hmmmm my wife’s cousin lives outside of London. Two years ago he was diagnosed with stg 4 GBM.. basically the most aggressive type of brain cancer with very low survival rates. Two years later he is still here. And doing much better. I would say the care he got was excellent.
Having gone through that myself a few years ago so I know the basics...but mine was here and cost a fortune...insurance paid of course.
Sorry for your situation. I don’t know why Brits behave so badly in America. I’ve seen it over and over again in New York City. It’s gotten so bad I won’t speak to them at my private club because they’re either crashing the joint or trying to get me to buy them a drink. The only nice Brit I’ve seen on tv is Katy Kay, the NBC reporter who actually seems to admire America.
Oddly enough, when I’m in England, I generally like the people. I think maybe it’s people who emigrate.
“Health Care” is the British Left’s socialist Pyramids, which they have been building over the last 60+ years.
NHS is the largest employer in the world. It takes huge amounts of resources, and since the propaganda is that everyone is so very “proud” of it, and its a touchstone for their progressive elite’s identity of what their society is - so just like ancient Egypt’s pyramids, its clear it will continue to suck up the UK’s resources at a growing rate - to the detriment of everything else they may do.
Beware British humour can be very warped. It may not be as bad as it first appears.
See how they interact with you at other times.
I do not understand why government is not subject to anti-trust laws. I’ve talked with friends who are attorneys and they were stunned by the very question.
I posed the question to the famous libertarian legal scholar Richard Epstein. He chuckled and said that the government should be subject in many situations (perhaps not with respect to police power), and even cited cases where the SCOTUS ruled wrongly that the federal government is exempt.
I work for a UK based one and all of the ones that I run into seem to like the USA.
