Its scarred and jagged crater is a reminder of the terrible devastation that Mount St Helens wrought over the Washington countryside 35 years ago.
Now a new study of the volcanic plumbing lurking beneath the 8,363ft (2,459 metre) summit suggests the volcano could yet again blow its top in an explosive eruption.
Geologists studying the volcano, which is responsible for the most deadly eruption in US history, have discovered a second enormous magma chamber buried far beneath the surface.
This giant pool of molten rock, which lies between seven to 25 miles (40km) below the surface, is connected to a slightly smaller chamber that lies directly beneath the mountain.

8 KM = approx. 5 miles, so 2 KM = approx. 1.25 miles.

I climbed St. Helens about twelve years ago with a group and it was a tough hike. We almost lost a neighbor’s kid to an ice covered cliff.

I saw a documentary on those (Nova?). They were talking about the end of the world, as we know it, if one of those erupts.
Thanks. I don't know why some people insist upon using metric measurements in their commentary, given that most Americans only have a passing familiarity with it.
It's like seeing foreign words and phrases in an article written in English. Unless you know that language, those words are complete blanks to you, and do not communicate.
I understand that metric is a more sensible system of measure, but we weren't raised with it, nor were most of us schooled in it. Conversely, most Europeans have been raised with the metric system, so I wouldn't think of using English measurements to communicate quantitative concepts to them. Much better to speak the language they're accustomed to.
I completely understand why the sciences have adopted the metric system. It's base 10, and only makes more sense to use as a universal system of measurement.
That said, I find it just a tad offensive that science types insist upon communicating quantitative concepts to American audiences in a system of measure they're mostly unfamiliar with.
Only recently, have I begun to see science shows where the hosts go out of their way to use terms of measurement that are familiar and well understood by American audiences. I feel like reaching out to them and thanking them for that small show of respect.
I did a fly over a few weeks ago and put it on you tube. Looks pretty quiet now.
Maybe the EPA could be put in charge and we could have a gigantic magma spill. ;-)
I guess this makes sense. Wasn’t the last eruption facilitated by chemical erosion in the rock, weakening the side of the mountain that slid away? Had the rock still been strong maybe it wouldn’t have blown right then?
Don’t know that much about it. IIRC, at the time, they said that the dome over the magma chamber had collapsed facilitating the explosion, but that was 35 years ago...........
Having been a runner, the K equivalents sank in by osmosis, I guess. I recall running a 5 mile race years ago which had KM markers and mile markers, and passing 8K shortly before the finish line.
So, after writing the preceding paragraph, I did a memory-check search. Sure enough, 8K is 4.97 miles.

This mountain is just a hill compared to Yellowstone.
I always thought the picture of the guy watching from another mountain was impressive. He was standing up in one frame, and in the next one, his butt was on the ground. I don’t believe the blast knocked him down, I thought I heard that his knees simply buckled from the visual intensity of what he was seeing...but I could be wrong on that.
True. The geology at Yellowstone is awe inspiring, and...scary.

I believe he was on Mt Shasta. And yes he just sat down at the sight.
Ohhh... That would work. If anyone could spill it, EPA could. Of course they would deny there is a spill until half a state is covered in lava. Then they would blame a consultant or a contractor.
Then again, they’d find a way to actually cause the super volcano.
