Target plans to close 13 stores nationwide, most in the Midwest where the store has its roots.
The Minneapolis, Minnesota-based retailer says a decision to close a store usually follows several years of decreasing profitability.
The retail giant plans to close the stores on January 30, 2016. The 13 are among Target's nearly 1,800 stores in the U.S.

I’ve been in my local Target maybe ten times, usually when I’m looking for a hard-to-find product, and I have never found anything there. Wasn’t aware of any of the previously mentioned controversy. I won’t lose any sleep over this.
Amusingly, there’s one in Grand Rapids, Michigan immediately adjacent to a ... Cabela’s.
I don’t shop at Target - too liberal. They could crash and burn for all I care.
Ditto that here. Watched in disbelief as Mooch photo-op "shopped" there and later claimed racial bias by the woman who asked her to get something off a top shelf. Like you, there's no power on earth to get me to set foot in a Target store again.
Oh, my goodness! That's like 2/3 of 1% of their stores! Run sell the stock!
I knew I could make a difference by not shopping at target. Gays like the more upscale stores, not target.

Target has oft been cited as a “progressive” retailer for the high wages and benefits they pay their employees as compared to other large chains such as Walmart.
Good news as far as I’m concerned - nice stores but when management is atheist/pro-homo/abortion, etc., it’s good to see it stumble.
True. 13 stores out of 1800 is not very significant, however, there is another part of the equation that's not mentioned here. Recently, Target made an aggressive move into Canada, opening up over 100 stores in 2013 (most were converted from the Zeller's discount chain, which Target acquired.) Earlier this year, Target Canada declared bankruptcy, closing the stores after less than 2 years in operation, losing over 2 billion dollars. Maybe Target will be fine from here forward, but it's something to keep your eye on if your an investor.

A few years ago, a hurricane rolled through town with no significant damage and in the aftermath I walked over to the shopping area.
Power was out for a few days and the difference between Home Depot and Target was huge. Home Depot had brought in several porta-potties for the neighborhood in case they were needed. The store was running on Generator with one register and a few lights. Items people may really need were brought up to the front of the store. Flashlights, gas cans, that kind of stuff.
Target was also open. Same story-Limited lights and registers. Employees were removing all frozen food for disposal and all were whining that they had to work. No preparation at all. I finally told one of them that since she’s hourly, she should be glad to be there, otherwise she doesn’t get paid.
I’ve worked retail (grocery) during power outages. If the power goes out and stays out for more than 5 or so minutes anyone who wants to stay is normally allowed to work as long as they want. The store stays open on generator power with limited lighting and registers, etc. but no refrigeration.
We covered all open cases and roped shut freezer doors. Then you wait until a ETR is received, if more than a hour they send in refer trailers. After two+ hours then you start to strip high value refrigerated items first to walk in coolers. That is moved to refer trailers first followed by the entire dairy dept and some produce. Dry ice is may be brought in for frozen foods after 8-10 hours out. I’ve done a 14 hour shoft once due to a outage, had some CWs complain I got paid more. They darted out about 10 min in to the outage.
