Lawmaker: Make NJ gun dealers carry ‘smart guns' (wants to force stores to carry them!)

State Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D) is working to change New Jersey’s laws to make smart guns available — 13 years after a measure that would require them was put into place.

A law written by Weinberg and passed in 2002 would require that New Jersey dealers only offer “smart guns,” which are weapons that activate only when their owners’ fingerprints are detected, within 30 months of such guns coming on the market.

The technology exists, but gun dealers throughout the country have resisted offering such guns — for fear of beginning the clock on New Jersey’s law and barring other gun sales in the Garden State.

“We passed that bill to help spur this technology,” said Weinberg on 60 Minutes. Weinberg said she’s looking to repeal the existing law, but instead require at least one type of smart gun be sold in any gun store.

Maybe they should start by forcing all cops to carry them.

So this would mean you could not try someones pistol at a shooting range

You could not teach a child to shoot without buying them a pistol.

This is simply weird

If any brick and mortar gun dealer even temporarily carries a “smart” gun, I will never set foot in the store again. If an online store does, even temporarily, I will never visit their web site again. If any manufacturer releases one, I will boycott their brand forever.

Because of the thugs on the left, I find even offering this technology completely unacceptable. As a practical matter, I would never buy, own, or use a gun that was designed to be unreliable. Smart guns are a stupid idea, made worse by petty tyrants.

If smart guns worked, then cops would be lining up to use them. Getting popped with your own pistol is a huge fear for police. A bigger fear is needing a gun and having it not work because it isn’t as smart as the manufacturer said it was.

And if the battery is dead, so are you. If you have a bandage on your finger, the cut could be the death of you.

My iPhone 6 has fingerprint ID. It works most of the time on the first try but after about a 2 second delay.

I DO NOT want that on my gun.

Yet the iPhone 6 sometimes gets moody about recognizing fingerprints if one just thoroughly washed his/her hands.
Imagine that, getting killed outside the gas station washroom just because of practicing good hygiene?
I concur with you 100% that technology is NOT needed on a firearm.

Over 10 years ago, in the junkmail that the NJIT alumni association used to send me (they will never get a thin dime from me), they were hyping how they had scammed grant money to develop this "smart" gun. The law was a bad law and some asshole PhD got a cash handout to help implement this bad law.

No. NOT ONE THIN DIME! I encourage every other alumnus to similarly refuse to contribute to that rotten cesspool of academic graft and executive abuse. No clue if he is there still but Joel Bloom can DIAF as far as I am concerned.

I say, have two smart guns—one to toss to the perp, and the other to gun the bastard down while he fumbles with it.

Some things just need to remain mechanical- especially when it is something the government wants to render inert at a convenient moment.

And needs to remove a mitten to count to three...

She is typical of what happened to NJ in the last 30 years, the New Yorkers moved here to escape the taxes and expense of NYC and proceeded to make it just like NYC...

What would happen to smart guns in case of an EMP? What would happen to those who depend on a smart gun for protection in case of an EMP?
