Trump supporters agree: America ain’t what she used to be

Marc Fisher at the Washington Post has some interviews with supporters of Donald Trump from around the nation this weekend which may provide a bit of needed insight into what drives the business mogul’s continued popularity. Many of these fed up voters don’t see The Donald as the problem. The problems started long before Donald’s name was known outside his own family, if not before he was even born.

The way Joe McCoy sees it, the last time America was great was when Ronald Reagan was president, when people played by the rules. No, it was in the ’70s, Holly Martin says, when you could depend on Americans to work hard. No, to find true American greatness, Steve Trivett contends, you need to go back to before the Vietnam War, “when you could still own a home and have a good job even if you didn’t have a college education.”

Even if they don’t have “Make America Great Again” campaign caps, Donald Trump’s supporters easily recite the signature slogan of the real estate developer’s insurgent presidential bid. And even if they don’t agree on exactly why the country lost its way, they do accept — give or take a few degrees of hyperbole — Trump’s contention that the United States has become, as he has put it, “an economic wasteland” that is “committing cultural suicide.”

I also agree that America ain’t what she used to be. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and I miss our society putting God first. Sadly, America's moral compass is sinking fast.

We need a strong leader who is willing to be used by God to turn things around, if that is God's Will. That leader needs to believe in The God of the Holy Bible, love America, and look out for American citizens! IMHO that leader is Trump!!! Go Trump!!

The cultural rot started with the post-JFK 1960s and the Johnson Administration, and then accelerated under the corrupt Clinton regime in the 1990s, when all pretense of morality and decency was thrown out the window. 9/11, the Patriot Act, the mismanaged GWOT, political correctness, and Obama have finished the country off.

America sure as hell isn’t what it used to be. I’m disgusted and ashamed of what it has become. Fag-marriage was the final straw. There’s no way I’d lift a finger for such a country that has become so pathetically vile and degenerate as to legally and morally equate two perverted homos as the same as a husband-and-wife.

I’ll give Trump, Cruz, Carson, or whomever, a chance to try to rectify things, but I’m not holding my breath. I believe the country crossed a line, and is now in an irreversable death-spiral of moral and cultural rot.

It really isn’t any more. I chalk it up to being old (I’m in my 40s) but it’s not that. What moral compass we had has gone woefully awry. I think about everything it took for my grandfather to get here, bring his kids here and to see this decline in my lifetime...I’m glad he passed a long time ago.

I’m not 100% sold on Trump. But I do think we need an aggressive leader who has the cojones to have the world in awe of us instead of viewing us as wusses due to the current wuss-in-chief.

God knows the battle coming and so do we.

“How America used to be” seems to describe the period between the end of WWII and the Vietnam war, 20 to 25 years. Before the war was the Depression and afterwards leftism began its long march through the universities.

That’s actually a very narrow slice in a nation’s history. I feel fortunate to have been old enough to remember all but the first few years.

I’m 66 and remember the real America of my younger days and feel connected t it, But today’s AINO(America In Name Only)? The main things I feel toward it are alienation and disgust. We now live in a breathtakingly filthy sewer forced us by One World elitists.

Didn’t Carter have anything to do with it?

Carter’s legacy is stagflation, which crippled the economy as he bemoaned the “malaise.” Reagan assuaged that by driving interests rate high to stop inflation.

The only other thing noteworthy of Carter’s time was the birth of CNN, chronicling his failure in Iran, and the oil embargo. Culturally, Carter had no effect one way of the other.

As someone about Trumps age, I find it easy to believe his explanation as to why he’s running.

I’ve agonized over the America we are leaving for my own children and grandchildren to live in and raise their families in. Most Freepers here probably feel the same way.

America hardly resembles the one I grew up in. It’s but a shadow of its former self, with freedoms, successes, and with respect from our friends, and fear of us by our enemies, all but non-existent.

Trump said he was running so that his family wouldn’t look at him, knowing he could have fixed it, but didn’t.

His own story of building the Trump Organization shows that he knows how to build great empires. Now he wants to make all of America great again.

I think we are but the lucky side beneficiaries

I love your enthusiasm, it's quite catching.

Still uncommitted on my end, but Ted Cruz has a slight, very slight, edge at this point. I might add that Trump has been the gainer. Cruz is a very smart person, while Trump seems to cross across all demographics more effectively.

You are 100% correct, the rot started with Lyndon Baynes Johnson and his Great Society. Except for a stutter during the Reagan years, the rot continued during all other administrations, either purposely by progressives or by blind RINO's!!!!!

The election of a muzzie along with the loss of our freedoms coupled with FAG marriage issue did it for me along with pissing away trillions of dollars that we cant possibly pay back making us all slaves.I tee off on the young people because they have no idea just how screwed they are.I’m an old guy with young kids and I stay in a perpetual state of being pissed. Our fathers would have already started a shooting war.

Carter was a failure as president, but contributed nothing to the moral rot. I mean, he took advice on foreign affairs from his daughter Amy. Isn’t that sweet? You’d have to have a heart of stone not to hate a man like that.
