The Road: Probably only seen by a small number of people compared with this list, but by far the darkest vision of the future I can think of. A superbly made and acted film with no big stars (unless you count a barely recognizable Robert Duvall) or Hollywood glitz like these others. Good catch.

Two things interesting about THX1138 (besides the motorcycles in L.A.’s 2nd Street tunnel): 1) it was a drug offense to NOT take your mood altering drugs, and 2)the prison had no walls or boundaries; the hero just said I am leaving and had the courage to just go ahead without even a vision of where it might lead.

2081, based on the Kurt Vonnegut story “Harrison Bergeron”.
The Handicapper General ensures everyone is truly equal, by hiding the faces of the beautiful, interfering with mental function of the intelligent, putting weights on the strong.

You have to include “Demolition Man” in the list.

My first thought as well. Very underrated conservative movie.

“The Walking Dead” without the zombies of course. The best representation of the future apocalypse/SHTF ever.

“The Time Machine” is a good representation of how it all turns out. The world already has millions of servile, weak, brainless “Eloi” waiting for the call....

The Road was just too dark and depressing.

Brazil is one of my all time faves. That movie is pure genius.

I saw THX 1138 recently and was impressed. I’m surprised it doesn’t get talked about more.

Children of Men was another pretty good dystopia flick.

The Road (2009).

That had a lot of potential but unfortunately it had neither an explanation or an ending......

What people don’t realize is that the “dystopian” futures are optimistic and unlikely.

An all-controlling government would be worse...and much more probable.

They’re striving for Logan’s Run, but will go thru Solent Green and will end up at 1984.

Add The Omega Man, The Warriors, and Escape From New York for starters.

The Road movie was extremely depressing. The book was more... palatable.

All good stories. Let me add one more (sort of recent) movie to the queue....

The Island(2005), PG-13, 136 min, Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, 22 July 2005 (USA)

"It is described as a pastiche of "escape-from-dystopia" science fiction films of the 1960s and 1970s such as Fahrenheit 451, THX 1138, Parts: The Clonus Horror, and Logan's Run. The film's plot revolves around the struggle of Ewan McGregor's character to fit into the highly structured world he lives in, isolated in a compound, and the series of events that unfold when he questions how truthful that world really is. After he learns that the compound inhabitants are clones who are used for organ harvesting and surrogate motherhood for wealthy people in the outside world, he escapes."
