In the early 90s Chronicles magazine featured some essays by Srda Trifkovic about the Balkans. This before Clinton got us involved there on the side of the Muslims. Srda's essays gave you an idea of just how convoluted things are there- at least three ethnic groups, with each ethnic group further split into rival religions. Srda said even the locals had trouble telling who was doing what. And it's nearly impossible to tell who the bad guys are in any of their wars.

Anyway Syria reminds me of all that. Multiple ethnic groups and multiple religions. Russia has been allied with the Assads for over 50 years. At least the Assads seemed to keep a lid on the chaos that erupts when no one has an iron hand over there.

Why Barky was trying to overthrow Assad is anybody's guess, not to mention the question of what was he doing starting a secret war there? Where was Congress on this?

insightful post. The ignorance of bush will go down as the most stupid move by a president in our history. We ,of couse . should have attacked those that attacked us. It is like they stereotyped all Arabs as looking the same. Beyond stupid. Cost us this country!!
