A group that Dubya was pals with had been itching to invade and conquer Iraq well before 9-11. Some of them had signed a letter to Clinton urging him to knock off Saddam back in 1998. In large part they orbited around the Project for a New American Century, a think tank of liberals and neocons who wanted us to reconfigure the Middle East by force. They were the sort of fools who never considered the role that Islam plays there, and in their imaginary world you could make Arabs into part of the West by sprinkling the magic pixie dust of democracy on them. The possibility that Arabs would vote for jihad against the West never occurred to these geniuses.
