The 70 Percent Solution
Townhall.com ^ | October 26, 2015 | Rich Galen

There is a phrase thrown around politics - RINO - Republican In Name Only. It refers to someone who is not a strong enough adherent to whatever Conservative principles the writer (or sayer) as believes the RINO should be.

I am a RINO.

I guarantee I am not a strong enough adherent to Conservative principles as defined by the Tea Party, the Freedom Caucus, or any of the other groups who have hijacked the Republican Party by demanding absolute fealty to their definition of Conservatism.

I was a Barry Goldwater Conservative. I was a Ronald Reagan Conservative. I was a George W. Bush Conservative.

This is the Ronald Reagan Republican part: He is quoted as having said:

"Die-hard conservatives thought that if I couldn't get everything I asked for, I should jump off the cliff with the flag flying - go down in flames.

"No, if I can get 70 or 80 percent of what it is I'm trying to get ... I'll take that and then continue to try to get the rest in the future."

Imagine Speaker-presumptive Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis) citing that Reagan quote last week. The members of the House Freedom Caucus would have lit their hair on fire and run screaming from the Capitol building.

Speaking of Ryan, it was announced this weekend that he has tapped David Hoppe to be his chief of staff. I've known David for nearly 40 years since his wife and I both worked for a young Congressman from Indiana, Dan Quayle.

That might read like it deserves to be a footnote, but in the Kremlinology of the U.S. House, who has the ear of a Leader is closely watched and Hoppe is a brilliant choice.

Today, I am a Jeb Bush, a Marco Rubio, and a John Kasich Conservative.

If that makes me a RINO then I will wear the label proudly.

In fact, I often identify myself as a "Trotskyite Republican." I made that phrase up, but in my mind it means I am very concerned about government spending and government intrusion in our personal and business lives.

But, on social issues: To each his/her own.

Someone emailed me over the weekend complaining that I was sounding like an "establishment" Republican.

I wrote back to say I AM an establishment Republican.

I've lived and worked inside the Beltway for most of my adult life. I have worked on Capitol Hill long enough (and frequently enough) to understand the solution to problems isn't as easy as it might seem at first blush.

That doesn't mean I approve of every line in every bill that has been adopted by the Republican Conference in the House or the Senate. But, it does mean I am willing to weigh the good a piece of legislation is designed to do, against the bad that might be included with it.

It means I don't require perfection as a starting point.

New Topic:

The three most recent polls of Iowa Republicans appear to indicate that Ben Carson is solidifying his position as the principal challenger to Donald Trump.

The CBS/YouGov poll has Carson and Trump tied at 27. The DMR/Bloomberg poll has Carson with a nine point lead, 28-19; and the Quinnipiac poll shows Carson with an eight point lead 28-20.

There is still a long way to go before the Iowa Caucuses in February, but these are significant results.

The 10 participants in Wednesday's CNBC Republican debate have been announced (with their polling averages):

Donald Trump: 25.22

Ben Carson: 19.78

Marco Rubio: 9.67

Jeb Bush: 8.11

Carly Fiorina: 8.11

Ted Cruz: 6.89

Mike Huckabee: 3.56

Chris Christie: 3.00

John Kasich: 3.00

Rand Paul: 3.00

I agree with most of what he wrote.

The problem, however, is that the current RINO/GOPe crowd won’t even try to get 70%...or 50%...or even 30%.

They talk a good game at election time but, as soon as they’re (re)elected, they find excuse after excuse to surrender: They’re afraid of a government shutdown, they’re afraid of the media, they’re afraid of the mythical “Hispanic conservative” vote, they’re afraid of the women’s vote, etc. It’s pre-emptive surrender, not compromise.

And, to make matters worse, they spend more time attacking the base than they do the Democrats.

If the GOP would fight first and THEN compromise they might not be viewed with such suspicion by the base. I know, at least in my case, I would be more willing to believe that the 70% is the best we can do.

Rush is ON this topic in today’s show in a major way— the absolute lying RINO center types who “reach across the aisle” to be reamed out and sent Left every time.

The show today is phenomenally on target about the repub, GOPe laziness, sitting on their a@@.

Oh, and Biden is going to run. He’s running. Someone has to keep the do’ open for obamaumao’s lobbying arm, which the Clintoonians will definitely NOT do.

Pursuant to this apologist drivel, I present IronJack’s Clear-cut Guidelines for Who’s a Conservative and Who’s a RINO:

1) If you support abortion, you’re not a Conservative. You can’t be both for murder and against it. Conservatives aren’t for murder.

2) You can’t support homosexuality. Either it’s wrong or it isn’t. Conservatives believe it’s wrong. The Bible tells us so.

3) If your quotient of shame at America’s misdeeds exceeds your pride at her successes, you’re not a Conservative. We have way more to be proud of than to be ashamed of.

4) If you look to socialism, with its record of repeated failures, as a viable model for this country, you aren’t a Conservative. Conservatives prefer solutions that work.

5) If you believe we are under some moral obligation to open our borders indiscriminately, including to parasites and criminals, you are not a Conservative. First and foremost, Conservatives believe in order, not chaos.

6) If your support for our military consists of a photo op at the Fourth of July parade, you’re a poser, not a Conservative.

7) If your answer to every (or ANY) problem is “there ought to be a law,” then you’re not a Conservative. Conservatives regard government as more of a problem than a solution.

There are more ...

Ronald Reagan was not 100% conservative, but he was 100% American.

Mr. Galen and his ilk don’t even know what that means.

Then, sir, you are no conservative. A conservative is Reagan, Gingrich and Cruz who have advanced conservative agendas and put it all on the line to advance laws or prevent bad ones. Bush and Kasich shouldn't even call themselves Republicans today much less conservatives.
These people have moved the goal line so many times they are now on the other team's endzone and are celebrating victory.

No, Rich, you didn't make that phrase up, and neither did I. Trotskyite Republicans are just as communist and corrupted as Trotsky was, differing only slightly in methodology from the Leninist Democrats about how to solidify totalitarian control. And of course, each group of communists wants to be sitting on the central committee.

RINOs aren't offering or delivering 70 percent of any conservative package. You are traitors to the USA and its citizens. You deserve hanging (after a quick and fair trial, of course).

It DOES make you a Rino, Galen. Wear it proudly to the defeat of your candidates.

Plus Rich, 70% is not enough, because at any one time, you would help the left finish off our country.

“Was” as defined by ....himself. Not Reagan or his policies. This is a BUSHIE machine baby establishment has-been. Rush’s topic exactly.

Ignoring the 94 million out of work, since they don’t live (anymore) in his gated condo in DC.

Ignoring the central conservative nature and being of patriot Americans of democrat, old repub. and new TEA persuasion.

In short— completely out of touch, and getting paid, no doubt for this “genius”. Long in the tooth.

Oh, and I read this article. It is a “resume” being thrown out there for yet another inside the beltway jobseeker without a clue. And not from a Leader.

One could NEVER have been a Goldwater conservative truly and then EVER have been a “BUSH” (1 or 2) conservative in the same vein. Dead giveaway.

“I am a RINO.”

Well, admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery!

Seriously though, this piece is a joke. Reagan had conservative principles, these modern RINOs have no principles. Reagan tried to get everything, but would settle for getting 70-80% of what he aimed for. These modern RINOs don’t even try to get anything, they just surrender to the enemy preemptively.
