Trump Is a Wake-Up Call--Even If He Fades
RealClearPolitics ^ | 10/24/2015 | Jonah Goldberg

Most of the politically savvy people I know are still confident that Donald Trump will not be the Republican nominee for president.

Some are even dismissive...

Giuliani, Dean, and all the other outsiders who failed to close the deal were constrained by those rules and standards of politics I referred to earlier... They couldn’t flip-flop — often mid-sentence — the way Trump can with carefree abandon. If they hurled childish insults at opponents and critics, it would have cost them dearly.

Meanwhile, Trump keeps on a’Trumping, flouting those constraints. His unfavorable numbers have actually come down in the process. It’s a cliché to say he’s defying the laws of political gravity, but it’s true. He respects only the laws of entertainment gravity.

And those laws may ultimately prove his undoing. Eventually, his shtick could get old, even for his fans. There are signs that this is happening. But there are also signs that he’s improving as a candidate. His interviews are getting sharper and less manic. Earlier this month, reporters kept asking Trump what it would take for him to drop out of the race. It seems to me what they were really asking was, “When will things get back to normal?”

The hard truth: They just might not get back to normal.

Whether or not he gets the nomination, Trump should be seen as a wake-up call. His entirely cynical exploitation of immigration — Trump criticized Mitt Romney in 2012 for being too harsh on immigration — tapped into an entirely sincere dissatisfaction with the status quo. His brilliant leveraging of his celebrity for political gain reveals much about the calcified state of American politics. Trump may fade away, but the forces driving Trumpism are more enduring and must be taken seriously.

“Most of the politically savvy people I know are still confident that Donald Trump will not be the Republican nominee for president.”

As some pundit said a couple of weeks ago, “Jonah has sand in his vagina again.”

The first thing Trump demonstrated is that most “Politically savvy” people are mistaken and have been mistaken about a great many things.

Agreed. I gave up reading and listening to “pundits” years ago. How those idiots have jobs is utterly beyond me.

I don’t trust any author who tries to paint Trump as anti-immigrant when his position has always clearly been anti-wetback.

They may get paid, but they don’t have “jobs.”

What? “Wake up demagoguery works, at least for a little while”. People either already knew that or won’t learn it. Which is kind of why demagoguery works.

Pretty good discussion. It’s still a long time before there’s a primary. Just about anything could happen.

The GOPe didn’t learn anything when Cantor was taken down either. So not so much hope for anybody waking up.

Unless Ronald Reagan comes back from the dead and runs again Donald Trump is not fading.

Speaking of pundits, whatever happened to Dick Morris? I haven’t yet heard from him in a very long time. I would have thought since he worked for Clinton, he would have come out of hiding with Hillary in the race.

Trump is like the lead car in a NASCAR race with a smooth running, hard charging engine.
Unless he crashes or blows out a tire he will be hard to overtake. Only Carson or Cruz have any outside chance. The others are sayonara. If Mittens comes in as relief pitcher for Yeb he can expect to have a rough outing.

Jonah is trying to get it. He’s doing his level best to get it.

He doesn’t get it. But he thinks he does.

At this point I am planning to vote for Trump and even go so far as to write him in on the ballot in the event he doesn't win the nomination. But he will have a slim shot of winning the general against Hillary as it will require the opposite of what's been the norm. RINO's will have to hold THEIR nose to vote for him. And the last time that was tried with Goldwater, it didn't turn out well.

Hillary will lose a bunch of black support but the Hispanic population will be energized like never before which normally wouldn't hurt Trump so much as they used to be concentrated in California and other states that will go to Hillary no matter what. But Obama has thrown a monkey wrench into that by slipping his immigrants throughout the country in order to turn more states to the Dems. Trump has a shot, but it's going to be quite slim and will require him to try to keep the RINO's from sitting out the race.

I used enjoy Jonah’s columns for the entertainment value. They were always light on substance but entertaining.

Now the cluelessness is so pervasive, his columns are not even entertaining.

Jonah wants to dip his feet in both camps, the first one steeped in reality (us) and the other one with the insiders (RINOS). Forget it Jonah. Time for you and other wannabe conservatives to put up or shut up.
