PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) -- Hurricane Patricia barreled toward southwestern Mexico Friday as a monster Category 5 storm, the strongest ever in the Western Hemisphere. Locals and tourists were either hunkering down or trying to make last-minute escapes ahead of what forecasters called a "potentially catastrophic landfall" later in the day.
The storm was homing in on a Pacific coastline dotted with both sleepy fishing villages and gleaming resorts, including the popular beach city of Puerto Vallarta and the port of Manzanillo. After hitting land, Patricia's projected path would quickly take it over mountainous terrain that's prone to dangerous flash floods and landslides.
In Puerto Vallarta, locals reinforced homes with sandbags and shop windows with boards and tape, and hotels rolled up beachfront restaurants. The airport was closed to all flights and all but deserted, but lines formed at a bus station by people anxious to buy tickets to Guadalajara and other inland destinations.

Hope you’re not near Crabb River. They really don’t need any more flooding there.
Grams, I’m by Reliant Stadium.
My bayou runs past me to the medical district and is the same one that floods highway 288
I just noted heavy rain cells south and west of Odessa and Midland in the last 4 hours, so good for them to get a little moisture.
Living in W. TX must be unpleasant.
It is by virtue of their illegal actions that we hold them in disdain.
How many more illegals will this hurricane drive north?
More powerful than Camille? I doubt it.
This weather event should funnel more moisture up into the Rockies region and down through Texas to the Gulf of Mexico next week. Colorado and Utah could see additional rains and possible snow at higher elevations.
Lower elevations near rivers and run offs could see localized flooding in southern states. If you are in a flood zone and don’t have flood insurance, now would be a good time to get it started. If you are in an intense flood plane, now would be a good time to start moving your belongings to alternate locations out of the flood zone if possible.
Listen to Joe Bastardi’s update on hurricane patricia for today, 23 Oct at: http://www.weatherbell.com/
He has forecast for tropical storm over gulf coast from Patricia after it crosses the Mexican mountains.
I should point out that immediately after Katrina the three organizations that showed up first to help were, in order of their arrival:
1. Samaritan’s Purse
2. The Canadian Navy
3. The Mexican Navy
Mexico helped save a lot of Americans in New Orleans and we should not forget this.
Thank you.
That's still a gynormous EF5 tornado.
That’s why you build concrete dome homes that are reinforced with re-bar!
Where’s Whorealdo? Isn’t he going to do a livecast of the eye making landfall?
It might kick start self deportation. There's going to be massive rebuilding going on.
Not yet! But the surf looks great.
Sustained winds of 215mph.
Those trees will be gone too, sheared at ground level.
Thanks for the link.

Whoops - forgot where you are. Sorry. 288 going under 610 will probably flood again. West Texas is not so bad. People from Austin are less apt to bother you there. Not much more but cows and tumbleweeds in some parts. We love the Hill Country. Wish we lived there.
