The crime is related to homemade wine. But can 74-year-old Karl Andree survive the punishment -- 360 lashes by Saudi authorities?
His son fears that he won't, conceding that while Andree may have done wrong in the eyes of Saudi officials, it shouldn't warrant what may amount to a death sentence.
"I completely understand that he has committed a crime and, for that, you have to face consequences ... He understands as well," Simon Andree told CNN. "But ... on the basis of his ill health, (I hope) he can get clemency and get released, because I feel he won't survive those lashes."

Maybe we can send Obama to bow before the man who lashes Mr. Andree to death, or send George W. Bush there to hold his hand and talk about "the religion of peace."
It’s beyond me why any westerner would live in any muslim country. I would not submit to living among those barbarians for any amount of money.
The Saudis probably have the most brutal form of Sharia law of any Muslim nation, unless you want to call ISIS a “nation.”
I wonder that myself and have no pity for those stupid enough to go there.
Iran’s is as brutal; it just doesn’t get reported as much.
And this is what our modern liberals want to suck up to.
Unfathomable foolishness. You’d almost think there was a devil. (/sardonic)
JMHO
We designed our culture for us... They designed their culture for their people.
It’s not PC, but it’s the truth.
Also, he OBVIOUSLY did NOT pay off/bribe the right people. There is ALWAYS and ALWAYS the right person to pay off. Payola is a part of our world.
He probably also might have given some of his booze to the Saudis. THAT would cause much prison time as well.
P.S. My husband and I lived over there for five years. Hubby had a wonderful still where he cooked FIVE gallons of 180 proof...cut to 90 proof. Wow. It gave no hangover but made one's THIGHS ache. The Brits always said "legless." Same thing.
My hubby also knew the Brit who could get REAL booze, from our military. Hubby paid $300.00 for a bottle of second rate scotch. That was 1983 money.
This guy didn't do his homework.
The American plan has always been (in my opinion) is to get the Saudis to use up all THEIR petroleum and natural gas resources and reserves and THEN, and only then, use our own resources and reserves.
Russia and the USA have the next largest petroleum and natural gas reserves AFTER the middle east.
The Saudis are our only FRIENDS over there. That isn't saying much, I know, but compared to our dealings with Iran, it is a "friendship."
I agree with you, though, about joining up with the Axis of Evil. There is some axiom about dealing with the devils we know rather than dealing with the devils we don't know.
American oilmen have been in the KSA since the 1920's, so it's not a "new" acquaintanceship.
All one has to remember is that Arabs don't think the way we do. Knowing that and keeping one's OWN goals in mind, one can deal. The USA is the largest consumer, by a HUGE margin, of the petroleum and natural gas resources in the world, so unless we care to CUT BACK ON USAGE, we are stuck paying through the nose. We won't cut back.
It doesn't change the fact that Saudi culture is utterly depraved.
Saudi’s are the most for getting blind drunk when out of their country.
Could that be the flaw in our logic? The Saudis are nobody's friends, they're a made-up royalty for a made-up country. We would've had plenty of oil if we let the other countries keep their dictators and let all of them take care of the Saudis.
I know someone who recently was forced to go to Saudi Arabia or lose his job. He went and checked out the project, and he said that the entire time he was there, every synapse in his body was telling him, “Get the hell out of here!” He came back home and quit his job.
Forgot to mention...in one year, he would have made enough money to probably retire on. All tax free.
The Saudis are Arabs. THAT is the kinship they have over there.
They were always special ONLY because Mecca is there. Mecca is the essential holy place for them. So, as long as Islam keeps Mecca as its holy place, Saudi Arabia will be the "Holy Land." It's not any more complicated than that.
The real kicker is that our good Lord saw fit to put those Bedouins on land that is SOAKED with petroleum and natural gas, just what the West wants and needs.
MECCA will always keep the rest of Islam at bay...nothing will change that. As soon as we KNOW that we can see the mechanics of life over there.
The Iranians have ALWAYS held their respective noses up at the lowly ARABS because THEY are PERSIANS, INFINITELY superior to the lowly Arabs. It must have GALLED the Persians, and many other Arab-haters, to see those simple Bedouins get richer than Midas. But, that's show-biz.
God put them in that God-forsaken desert, a place that NO ONE else on the planet wanted. So...if WE don't like it we can discuss it with our good Lord. I don't question His plans. Why would I?
Forget ISIS, bomb Saudi Arabia.
welcome to expat reality.....I did 17 yrs in the ME, N and W Africa. Ya take your risks and thats that. If he dies...he dies.
re:”It is beyond disgusting that US policy props up the Sauds and fights their wars for them. And it’s no fun when US policy puts our country in the Axis of Evil.
JMHO”
we can thank Nixon and Kissinger for this. We agreed to protect the Saudis in exchange for the Saudis propping up the bankrupt US dollar in the late 1970’s - the petrodollar.
Another solution would have been to cut back government and government spending - oh the horror !
The rigid mind of the Saudi’s under the yoke of Shari Law tells us why they are such a backward nation. Even with the incredible wealth of their oil money, they are a backward nation living in the fantasy world of a narcissist “prophet” thief. Tell me one industry (other than oil production) they have created. Is their a Saudi Microsoft? Amazon? Apple? Volkswagen? Samsung? GE? Even American enterprise built their oil production capability. That technology they stole from the West. What does Saudi Arabia do? Beat people to death because they made a little home made wine. That home made wine maker could have become Saudi Arabia’s leading wine producer. So short sighted. Pathetic!!!
What a total waste of humanity Saudi Arabia has become.
