Trump Viewed As Having Strongest Leadership Qualities Of All Candidates

Say what you will about Donald Trump, but one thing is clear… he’s a leader. The American people seem to agree. A new CBS poll shows Trump rates heads and shoulders above all other candidates when it comes to strong leadership qualities. Almost two thirds, 65 percent – of Americans say Trump displays strong leadership. Joe Biden (Joe Biden?) comes in second, but a full ten points behind. Hillary Clinton is close behind at 53 percent, followed by Dr. Ben Carson at 51 percent, Carly Fiorina 44 percent and hippie socialist Bernie Sanders in last place at 39 percent. rump still leads the GOP field with 27 percent, followed by Carson at 21 percent. The rest of the pack is in single digits. Also good news for Trump: Seven in ten GOP primary voters would support Trump if he became the party’s eventual nominee. Finally, 35 percent of likely GOP voters said they think Trump has the best chance of winning the election.

Candidates always poll the highest shortly before they actually declare. Hillary was polling higher before she made her candidacy official. If Biden jumps in his numbers will initially fall, and then become more stable after he establishes whether he will sink or swim. (This only applies to career politicians. These are the people voters like more when they’re not running.)

Trump is very outspoken and successful in business, but I don’t think that necessarily makes him a good leader.

I think Trump is a quick learner/study. One can see how much he has changed/learned during this campaign. He will do the same one he is President. It won’t take him long to learn the ropes.

But why does only 35% of likely GOP voters think Trump has the best chance of winning the election? Shouldn't that be HIGHER???

He has a dedicated base, but his net favorability rating is low. Detailed analysis here. You may not consider the source reliable, but you do sense something amiss, and are asking the question.

But effectively getting wrong ideas enacted (cf. Obamacare) is worse than getting no ideas enacted. Trump has opined favorably about single-payer, and despite avowed support of traditional marriage has also said his views on the matter are “evolving”.

Reagan was a great president because he combined strong leadership qualities with an unerring sense of sound policy. . . Trump, not so much.

The low-information voters and left-wing ideologues who supported Obama have no notion of sound policy. I think most of us on FR have a notion of what sound policy is.

Oddly, I think the folks who voted for Obama though he had great leadership qualities because he could read speeches in sonorous tone and seemed cool under pressure.

Oh my, you are so misinformed. Trump isn’t for single payer - Mark Levin interviewed him not long ago and specifically asked him that question. As for Reagan on social issues - he isued to be for abortion too. So, please get your facts straight before spewing anti-Trump jargon.

I did not say he is for single payer. I said he had spoken favorably about it. There is a matter of verb tense you should attend to when reading my posts. I am troubled by the policy judgement of anyone who once they attained the age of 30 or so (and Trump was older than that when he flirted with the idea) could consider single-payer at all, given its record in the U.K. and Canada. In Trump’s case, since he plainly has a solid grasp of economics (at least at the gut level needed to be a successful business man), this is particularly distressing.

Good Lord - he was in his 30s? That was nearly 40 years ago and you are distressed? Give me a break. We are heading toward single payer right now - and Trump has said repeatedly he wants to repeal Obamacare. So, give it up - that was a long time ago when he said it seemed to work well in canada and DenmarK. However, he also said that the population is too large in the U.S. for it be work here. I guess you are the one who likes living in the past tense.

No, it was within the last decade that Trump spoke favorably of single-payer. I picked 30 because of Churchill’s remark that if a man is not a liberal at 20 he has no heart, if he is not a conservative at 30 he has no brain.

A decade is 10 years and he has said repeatedly that he doesn’t want single payer in the U.S. Stop spreading lies.

A lie would be to say he spoke favorably about single-payer when he never did. I am not spreading lies, but pointing out on the basis of prior statements that Trump's judgement on policy matters is not so sound at you and his other supporters may wish to believe. For all his business acumen, to have even flirted with the idea of single-payer, again not in his youth, but after reaching full adulthood, calls into question his judgement on economic policy.

I don’t know who your candidate is but, if it’s Cruz - then one has to question his judgment on things recently as well. How about the Corker bill - or the fact that his entire staff told him McConnell was lying and he chose not to believe them - then went on the Senate floor and had his little tirade when all he had to do was listen to his advisers. He also voted for TPA before he voted against it. Now, look at all the candidates - you can see some changes and question their judgment in each of their lives. Yet, you choose to hold something that Trump said a decade ago against him. Pitiful reasoning!

I’m not wild about any of them. Cruz on the TPA and his mistake in speaking to Middle Eastern Christians of insisting Israel is “the best friend Christians have in the Middle East” (no, sorry, that would be the Lebanese government where they actually have a say, with the Assad regime a close second) make me uneasy about supporting him. However, at least he understands the constraints of the Constitution and doesn’t seem to have embraced Caesarism.
