It appears that the second Monday in October being celebrated as "Columbus Day" is going the way of the Confederate battle flag and monuments to Southern soldiers – and for much the same reason. More and more cities are dropping the acknowledgment of the European discovery of America in favor of "Indigenous Peoples Day."

No we didn’t celebrate the holiday that some leftists celebrate for the butchering, cannibals some call indigenous people.

Yes I celebrated Columbus Day, I explained to my grandson why is it Columbus Day, and what Christoper Columbus did and how it affects our lives...

I don't believe Columbus landed on the continent of North America in any of his three voyages, but he set in motion the settlement of the New World.
In any case, he has long been honored by Americans. At one time, many called our country Columbia, which is reflected today in the name District of Columbia. Hail, Columbia ! was our first national anthem, and Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean was once a popular patriotic song.
And to top it off, we went and named our federal district after him.
I'd like to time-drop Sarah into the middle of the Aztec capital so she can get a good handle on murder, enslavement, and decimating populations.
Actually, I'm rather apathetic about Columbus Day, but I'm weary of the notion that my native ancestors just laid around all day, worshiping the Earth Mother and smoking peace pipes. They were actually a pretty ruthless people.

Yes, it would be nice to have history without the mythology and hagiography.
The real objection to Columbus Day, I think, has less to do with Columbus himself and more to do with any kind of celebration of European settlement here, which, of course, not only ruined things for the natives, but also ruined the land, in the long run, pretty much the world itself.

what is the definition of ‘indigenous’ anyways? Does it mean people who found the continent, lived there for awhile, then brutally murdered others who also found the land and wanted to live there too? Because that’s exactly what the Indians did- the white man wasn’t the first to ‘steal land’ as the liberals like ot call it- they weren’t the first to go to war with people to gain land- They weren’t the first to fight to retain what they had gained-
Sick of hearing how brutal the white man was when the Indians and heck, all cultures were when expanding outward to other lands- indigenous? Even Adam and eve were guests in the garden of eden- they weren’t natives- they were planted there- just like EVERY ‘invading’ group thereafter

There was a great Sopranos episode where a bunch of jokers were protesting Columbus day... Tony and the boys were pretty irate. Don’t remember how it played out. Probably not good for the protesters.

Columbus Day was a sop to Catholics because it “shows” that they were the “founding faith” in the hemisphere, as well as to what was then the growing Italian American population at the time.
I toasted Columbus with a swig of beer, and toasted Dixie with another.
Sure I’ll celebrate it. Right after I get around to celebrating Kwanzaa.
