Man, I envy Sarah Hypen-Name. I have so many things on my plate that I can't afford to be concerned with the name of a holiday.

I'd like to time-drop Sarah into the middle of the Aztec capital so she can get a good handle on murder, enslavement, and decimating populations.

Actually, I'm rather apathetic about Columbus Day, but I'm weary of the notion that my native ancestors just laid around all day, worshiping the Earth Mother and smoking peace pipes. They were actually a pretty ruthless people.

Yes, it would be nice to have history without the mythology and hagiography.

The real objection to Columbus Day, I think, has less to do with Columbus himself and more to do with any kind of celebration of European settlement here, which, of course, not only ruined things for the natives, but also ruined the land, in the long run, pretty much the world itself.
