The worst job in the world, it turns out, isnt the U.S. presidency but speaker of the House of Representatives.
Its where you go to die, as one veteran Hill watcher put it to me.
Volunteers?
In the wake of Majority Leader Kevin McCarthys (R-Calif.) sudden withdrawal from his once-certain ascent to the speakership, several others are considering running for the job.
McCarthys fall wasnt only owing to his verbal blunder suggesting that the House select committee investigating Benghazi was primarily created to bring down Hillary Clinton. Like Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), he was shafted by the three dozen or so members of the Freedom Caucus who promised a bloc vote in exchange for public pledges, which McCarthy (to his credit) refused to make.
He simply didnt have enough votes.
By Friday, the hands-down favorite to take the spot was Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who vehemently has said he doesnt want the job. Indeed, who in his or her right mind would want to walk into this seething ring of winning losers?
By Friday afternoon, a dogged Ryan was moving from an absolute no to possibly considering. He left the Capitol pursued by a swarm of reporters and photographers as if hed just emerged from an intergalactic chrysalis bearing greetings from the Supreme Being instead of heading home to talk things over with his wife.

SOTH is where you go to die?
Regardless, Ryan is dead to me anyway.
Ryan is a policy wonk..not a negotiator. He would be a terrible speaker.
I can’t help remembering the debate and how he let Plugs run rough shod over him.
And if Ryan became Speaker then he'd serve in that role so long as the Republicans were the majority party. In the unlikely event the Democrats took control then maybe he be elected minority leader until some future time the Republicans controlled the House again and he could be Speaker again. But he would never be President, and that's what he has his eye on.
Well as I see it, 2 down one to go....
There has to be someone in the House that isn’t dirty, wouldn’t you think???
If you go back before the 1960s...the Speaker role went to a guy with organizational skills and he kinda served as a umpire. Neither Pelosi or Boehner....nor even Gringrich...were of that top of character.
Go back and review just how bad of relations between the Senate and the House from 1963 to 1971. Even Democrats complained about their own leadership and felt that things were spiraling at that point (they even had three-quarters of the membership for a two-year period).
Ever hear of Uncle Joe Cannon?
Dem from Missouri if I remember correctly....from the old crew that came out of the 1920s/1930s. Really didn’t fit into the 1960s Democratic style of management.
Jim Jordan is my choice. I know it won’t happen, but he is the tough conservative we need in that position.
If you feel that this guy is worth it, post some articles so everyone can read and research him, I’m interested and I’m sure there are a lot of others are also....
Why don’t you Google him and see who he is? He was on Fox this morning and did a fantastic job.
I have, he’s not my choice....
In my opinion, you need the most militant individual to be speaker and then let the rest of the conference do the “moderating”. Not the other way around.
I get a kick out of these threads.
We have suggestions of people that would not even get a third of the Republican caucus like West or Newt.
Republican are not like the Dems in majority. We have no accepted party wide agenda to transform the government so we have no ability to unite wide positions.
A Speaker from this party is s 55% guy who has to run it nasty to even keep a 55% majority. Conservatives acceptable to this forum don’t make up 20% of the Republicans.
most of the members just want a Speaker that will keep the fighting to a minimum so they can each try to make their own little world of accomplishments.
Newt!
Agreed.
Newt, Newt, Newt!!
Maybe Paul Ryan could explain this to me. But, since he doesn’t read FR, perhaps one of you very well informed Freepers could. The projected revenues of the Govt are projected to be 6 Trillion in 2015. The Govt will spend 3.8 Trillion in 2015. Yet we are projected to have .3 Trillion (300 billion) deficit... The way I do the math 2.2 Trillion dollars is missing from this equation. Maybe I’m the one missing something. Help financially informed freepers.
Paul Ryan has said he doesn't want to be speaker. It might be because he realizes he wouldn't do a good job or because he does not like the job. In either case, I do not want somebody who can't or won't do the job to be speaker.
Ryan also holds views that are contrary to American interests. He would not have the respect of great number of voters.
So who is?
I wouldn’t vote for him for dog catcher.
