Donald Trump wants America to believe he's the best deal maker on the planet. But it was the deal Trump couldn't seal that probably saved Cleveland its baseball team.
In a Feb. 15, 1983 letter to Indians President Gabe Paul, Trump's lawyer offered to buy the team for $13 million.
Had the deal gone through, many believed at the time -- and still do -- that the front-runner for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination would have wasted little or no time moving the team to another city, most likely Tampa.
Longtime Plain Dealer sportswriter Russ Schneider, whose 30-year career at the newspaper included 14 as the Indians beat writer, discovered the letter among some files left him by the late Ted Bonda, the team's principal owner from 1975-78 and a shareholder both before and after.
Kenneth Molloy, a prominent New York attorney and later a judge, wrote to Gabe Paul:
"My client, Donald J. Trump, is interested in purchasing the Cleveland Indians Baseball team.
"I am authorized to offer Thirteen Million dollars for same free from debt and subject to usual review and acceptance of all contracts in effect.
"Your early advice would be appreciated. I am certain a two-day visit to Cleveland will provide adequate time to make our examinations and finalize this matter."

LOL, once a worm is dried up, I think it’s beyond a return.
I could be wrong I suppose.
Perhaps you’re just having fun too.
Take care...
It's no coincidence that the Plain Dealer attack on Trump (first in the latest polls among GOP presidential contenders) should come one day after the GQ Magazine "F___ Ben Carson" piece. (Carson is second to Trump in the polls.) That's because both the Plain Dealer and GQ are published by the very same Newhouse media conglomerate.
So is The New Yorker, where Sidney Blumenthal told the world that Vince Foster was supposedly "depressed" and "committed suicide" days after Foster's body was found in Ft. Marcy Park in 1993, and where Linda Tripp was savaged following her revelation of the Bill Clinton - Monica Lewinsky affair in 1998.
Apparently not a lot has changed over more than two decades: the Newhouse organization is still doing the Clintons' dirty work for them!.
And they stopped Rush from buying into a football team. Why cares?
the Clintons are wasting their breath...on all fronts.
Hillary wont make it to the election..and maybe bot even the convention.
Yes, the pro football owners are, as a group, leftist like the other major professional sports. You'll still find some conservatives among the pro and college football coaches though, because it's still a real men's game.
We already know a thousand times more about Trump’s past than Obama’s.
Nice way of words. That's exactly how it is in the world of business. You don't win every deal. In fact, you would be a poor businessman if you simply paid asking price and you'd be bankrupt quick. Trump is smart enough to offer what he feels is a fair price and then walk away from the deal if the price gets too high.
I work for a very successful company. We are often bidding on RFPs. However, we only win maybe 30% of all the RFPs we go after. And in our industry, that's considered a decent success rate. We've also walked away from business that was offered to us as we felt it would not be profitable for us. Let the competitors take the losing deals.
I’m not in favor of trump’s candidacy for presidemt. However, this story of his f allure to close a business deal, though n in itself an interesting story, doesn’t reflect poorly on trump in any particular way. If it is meant to be an attack on trump, it’s rather weak.
Yes, the Clinton’s (and the Left’s) dirty work... to be sure.
Good comments. Thanks.
