Cruz: Trump won't be GOP nominee
Politico ^ | 10/09/2015 | Nick Gass

Donald Trump will not be the Republican nominee for president, Ted Cruz said Thursday, claiming that a majority of the Manhattan real-estate mogul's supporters would end up voting for him instead.

Cruz was asked whether he believed he could beat Trump based on his principles, in an interview with WABC's Rita Cosby that will air on Sunday. "I think that's right. I think in time I don't believe Donald is going to be the nominee and I think in time the lion’s share of his supporters end up with us," the freshman senator predicted. "And I think the reason is what I was just saying, that if you look to the records of all the Republican candidates there's a big difference between my record and that of everyone else if you ask, who has stood up to Washington?

He continued: "Who's taken on not just Democrats, but taken on leaders in their own party? Republican leadership, whether was leading the fight to stop Obamacare? Whether it was leading the fight to stop executive amnesty? Or actually, just going back to last week. You know at the last Republican debate in California, every Republican candidate stood up there and said, 'we need to defund Planned Parenthood.' But last week, when we had an epic drag down fight in Washington, not one of them showed up."

Cruz, who has declined to criticize Trump, unlike some of his GOP presidential rivals, reiterated that he is "glad" he is in the race and that his candidacy has reflected favorably on his own positions.

Cruz mis u nderstands Trumpers. They hate Cruz’s disdain for American workers with his amnesty and 500% increase in H1b work visas and his support for NAFTA like trade deals. A pox on him

The magazine cover is a fail. We don’t want to see Trump save our “democracy”. We want him to save what the founders intended which is a REPUBLIC, something quite different. I am not actually certain that Mr. Trump understands the difference anymore than the magazine writers do however. At this point there is no republic left to save, Mr. Trump would have to rebuild it, I am sure he understands the rebuilding concept.

He was in the George W Bush administration. It is not all he is... but he has been an insider too.

"All you Cruz bashers, what did you expect him to say."

Cruz: "I'm not going to comment on hypotheticals."

"I want to talk about how I'm the one true conservative and the issues.."

"My campaign is exploding with tiny grass roots people who don't poll."

I no longer think Trump will spontaneously implode based on something he says.

BUT

I still think something will take him out. It will be either a personal scandal (like pageant contestant allegations of sexual harassment) or something of a legal nature (charges filed against him for something illegal)

Both would be pure BS, but as we all know, all that matters is the seriousness of the charge.

You are right to say that this dynamic is why Trump and Carson are doing so well, and Carly too. HOWEVER...to say Cruz is "part of the political class" is a bit absurd. He's never had anything in common with McConnell McCain Graham Boehner etc. He's never been part of the Fox News Wall St. Journal Chamber of Commerce crowd. By your definition, that anyone in politics is part of the political class - then A: they're now ALL part of that class and B: you've given up hope because obviously you think someone is part of the problem simply by taking the oath of office.

Did I ever say Cruz was part of the problem? Of course not. I was just explaining why he was not doing well in the polls. NONE of the candidates that are politicians are doing well in the polls, it does not matter how they have performed. People want an outsider, and in their minds that excludes all politicians.

Cruz needs to start generating some excitement if he wants the position. He also needs a bit more “natural passion” because he’s sometimes too polished.

He’s raising lots of money and keeping a low profile. But that isnt a good long-term plan.

“How Trump responds to this”

Well just let me say this. Cruz brought it on himself. I like Cruz and if he had only kept his mouth shut I think he would have gotten the majority of Trump backers IF Trump pulls out. Cruz making the prediction that Trump gets out and his backers are going to him is an arrogant, boneheaded this for him to say. Bye Ted. It was good knowing you. I thought if all the candidates he had respect for Trump. I was wrong.

Lets assume for a minute that both Trump and Carson either implode or are driven out of the race for whatever reason. Which is very probable. Since it happens to nearly everyone but the actual winner each election.

Where else but Cruz do former Trump or Carson supporters go?

No one who supports Trump or Carson is ever going to switch to any of the RINO’s like Bush.

Cruz is the natural go to guy for both those sets of voters.

I think Cruz isn’t reading the populace correctly at this juncture. The populace may change or
accept a political insider but it seems to me they are saying lets try a non political person
for a change. For sure Trump is that type in that he’s not held elective or appointed political offices.

If you look at Cruz’s history he in some form or another has been mostly involved in political
positions, appointed or elective. Trump on the other hand has been involved to the extent that
he tries to persuade politicians to his way in many of his projects.

I’m not sure Trump will prevail, time will tell, but by the same token I believe Cruz has a much
harder sell to get the majority of the voting public to come his way for elective purposes.

We are less than four months out until Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina begin the
selection process. Then on March 1, Super Tuesday, 13 states express their choices. Several more
follow during the rest of March.

Lots will happen and candidates will rise, fall or drop out.

Dr. Carson scares me. I give him all the credit for his magnificent accomplishments in medicine but I DO NOT see him as the man who should occupy the oval office. On the other hand there seems to be something about him that people respond to and I am not confident that he will NOT win the nomination. In some ways I see him as a Republican Jimmy Carter, very intelligent in his own field, no not a peanut field, I mean the nuclear field but very overconfident of his ability to be president. At one point Carter was “Jimmy who” and no one thought he had a chance to be nominated, let alone become president.

I sure hope not because Cruz could not win the general election. He has no broad appeal.

I've had her as head of The Department of Interior for quite some time. In the beginning, I'd slotted her as VP, until The Donald conferred with Jefferson Sessions on immigration. (I cringed at referring to the invasion by criminal aliens as immigration.)

Agreed. Mr Rogers-Carson is not fit to be Prez, and he will not be. But he might get the pubbie nod due to the pubbie white guilt vote. He will get creamed by Hillary or Biden. Not sure about Sanders though.

Better than Rubio, who can’t even show up to vote.

Cruz takes the time, as well, in between those meetings to accurately call McConnell a liar and point out the corruption in the Senate. Not your typical Republican politician.

I doubt Trump will take offense at another candidate saying “I’m gonna win.” He says the same thing himself.

A candidate saying “I’m in it to lose it.” shouldn’t be in it in the first place.

This IS the case with Kasich, Pataki, Christi, and all the other low percenters. They are mostly there on behalf of the GOP-E to keep delegates from going to anyone but Bush.

I will make an exception for Paul. Paul is in it as a quasi-covert libertarian.

Carson, Cruz, Trump, and Bush appear to be the ones who are in it to win it. Fiorini is a bushite, but I’ve no doubt she’ll go for the prize if her horse gains traction. It’s unfortunate, though, because the case against her is pretty strong and was made easily by Barbara Boxer.

Cruz blinked. He usually sticks robotically to his talking points, but this shows a chink in his armor.

Possibilities:
A. His Club for Growth/Goldman-Sachs/Koch backers want him to attack Trump and he’s doing his good little puppet work.

B. The “deal” whatever it was, between Cruz and Trump has evaporated.

Neither possibility is good for him. And thinking that he’ll get all the Trump supporters is the dumbest thing to come out of his mouth since he compared himself to Jesus on the Senate floor.
