Students React to Possibility of Allowing Guns on Campus

The heinous violence that unraveled at a community college in Oregon last week is fresh on students' minds at Miami Dade College.

Students are more uneasy to learn lawmakers in Tallahassee are considering a bill to allow guns on Florida school campuses.

"It makes me anxious and unsafe to know anybody could be carrying a gun. We're all human and capable of having a bad day," said Shaloma Gutierrez, MDC student.

"I feel it'd be more provocative for violence. I don't agree and I hope it changes and it just doesn't pass," said Sydne Garcia, MDC student.

Those students mirror how most people feel. A statewide poll released by the University of South Florida says more than 7 out of 10 Floridians want to continue the concealed weapons ban on college campuses.

The president of MDC released this statement: "The bottom line is allowing people with concealed-weapons licenses to carry guns on college and university campuses would only endanger them. This is a risk and cost that we cannot afford."

Still, state and house committees have voted to support the bill. The grassroots organization "Students for Concealed Carry" argue gunmen who target college campuses could be stopped if students and staff are allowed to be armed. But those attending MDC's Wolfson Campus disagree.

"There have been some incidents where people feel threatened but I don't believe that we should go as far as permitting guns on grounds because that will promote more violence," said Thomas Thielen, MDC student.

Another similar but separate bill is also gaining attention in the House, that would allow people with concealed weapons permits to openly carry guns. The next set of hearings on that bill haven't been scheduled.

Bullshit!

Florida leads the country IIRC in terms of gun permits to carry with well over a million licenses, yet 70% want guns banned on campus? BRAVO SIERRA!

These are young people who believe their innocence protects them from a person who has no feelings/qualms as to killing others in a cowardly way. I have a gut feeling that these students would be talking differently if a US service person were gunned down.

Promotes more violence? This guy is dumb as dog crap.
I guess MDC stand for Mentally Deficient Collegian.

The psycho with the gun who wants to kill you is the one “promoting violence”, not the guy with a gun who is there to protect you.

This is Orwellian thinking at its’ worst.

Remind me never to send my kids to a Florida school. Once the wackos find out that the campuses are “gun free”, they are going to have a field-day of slaughter.

Just how often do concealed carry permit holders commit crimes with guns? How would allowing them to carry on campus endanger the other students? Clearly if anyone in the classroom at that Oregon community college had had a gun, far fewer students would have been killed.

The headline should have been:

“Statements From Students At MDC Prove They Are Panty Wastes and Cowards”

“Statements From Students At MDC Prove They Are IDIOTS!”

*** “Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE had a rifle or shotgun in their truck, along with other hunting and fishing gear depending upon the season” ***

And we left the keys in the Ignition and in 4 years of High School there was only (ONE) vehicle that was ever misplaced (it was the Principals Truck and we stole it every year and parked it in a different place with a different paint job)

The reason that there are not mass shootings of children in Israeli schools is that ALL TEACHERS are armed....and the weapons are not necessarily concealed.
