Story highlights

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections may have used the wrong drug for the execution of Charles Warner that occurred last January

"I was not aware nor was anyone in my office aware of the possibility until the day of Richard Glossip's scheduled execution," Fallin said

~snip~

Oklahoma's difficulties began in April 2014, when Clayton Lockett died gasping for air, writhing on the table. After the botched execution, Fallin ordered a full review of the state's procedures, which took five months to complete. The state adopted a new protocol in September 2014.

~snip~

The Associated Press reported that Warner "showed no physical signs of distress" after the drugs were administered although he did say, "My body is on fire."

Fallin said that the pharmacist who provided the drug had assured the DOC that the drugs are medically interchangeable. But her critics, note that potassium acetate is not officially part of the State's protocol

Gov. Mary Fallin talked tough on that Ten Comandments Monument in OK.

Then this middle of the night cave in earlier in the week.

She’s as spineless as Boehner.

I suspect that whomever calculated the dose of KCL equivalent of K-acetate did it wrong. The total amount of free K ion is what kills you. Also he should have been asleep from a sedative prior to starting the potassium drip. I think two mistakes were made.

Was he not sentenced to die?

Did the drug carry out the sentence?

I rest my case judge.

Just bring in a veterinarian. They know exactly how much to administer to an animal in order to put it down. These MD’s have no experience.

The SOB sodomized an infant to death, they should’ve used gasoline on him.

And a cage for convenient public viewing in the biggest arena in Oklahoma.

I think they should have used a metallic lead injection with a copper buffering liner.

Potassium depolarizes the cell membranes. ATP is expended to drive sodium out of a cell and pull potassium inside. The potassium gradient provides the "drive" for subsequent reactions. Adding more potassium on the outside of the cell equalizes the osmotic gradient. That immediately "pulls the plug" on the energy source. For heart muscle, that means it stops beating.

There is somewhat confirmed rumor that that US government purchased 30,000 modern guillotines. Nice steel frames. Quality bearings. Engineered to cut off 100 heads per hour. Nothing as quaint as the old wood model in your picture.

Hmm...69.5 million 0bama voters divided by 30,000 is 2317, at 100 an hour, less than a day.

Just playing with my calculator a little. Nothing to see here...

I’m the type who took history classes as electives in college. WW2 is one of my specialties. I remember learning that the botched Nazi executions were claimed to have been done on purpose. After 25 years since college, I admit I had to refresh my memory on the finer details.

Did you factor in suitable amounts of time for maintenance and cleaning or is this just a rough estimate of the job?

Just a rough estimate. I figure if you put the thing on a hill you could use a chute to collect the heads and dispose of them pretty much real time. You could do sculpture. In 1398 Tamerlane built a pyramid of 90,000 human heads in front of the gates of Delhi. Do you believe that nobody has topped that since? We’re Americans, dang it, we can do it!

My theory is that Sgt. Wood botched them on purpose based on the various statements he left and the opportunity to get it right by hanging a number of soldiers in the two years or so preceding his major performance. What’s yours?

Fascinating fact about the legendary Guillotine: Condemned prisoners were so frightened and acted so crazily that their heads continued to chatter minutes after being lopped off.

If there's one thing the French got right, it was executions. The Guillotine was the best execution method in world history.
