Fallin said that the pharmacist who provided the drug had assured the DOC that the drugs are medically interchangeable. But her critics, note that potassium acetate is not officially part of the State's protocol

IIRC, the usual compound used is Potassium Chloride, not Potassium Acetate.
It’s the Potassium that causes the heart to stop. The anion is not important, afaik.
Also, I think this is administered after the condemned is unconscious.

Potassium Acetate and Potassium Chloride will do that to yah depending on drip rate and sedative dosage.
Sounds like they wanted him to have a warm send off.
Having experience a KCl drip that was too fast I can attest to it feeling like napalm coursing in my vein before I ripped the IV port out.
