Employees for the federal government earn far more than their counterparts in the private sector, according to a new study by the Cato Institute.

Federal workers’ pay and benefits were 78 percent higher than private employees, who earned an average of $52,688 less than public sector workers last year.

The study found that federal government workers earned an average of $84,153 in 2014, compared to the private sector’s average of $56,350. Cato based its findings on figures from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

its total obscenity but we'll have freepers on here defending this monstrosity saying they "earned" it when we all know, most govt jobs involve paper pushing..

as long as they get away with it...and we all had a chance to be federal worker flunkies but then who would do the real work of the country?.

Is this including all the under-the-table payments and revolving-door sweetheart deals for politicians? That right there is enough to wreck the curve....

And yet, the unions representing the feds will scream and cry about being paid less than the private sector.

‘as long as they get away with it’... As long as the same pols (R&D) are continually elected and reelected, ‘they’ will continue to ‘get away with it’. We have met the enemy and it is.....us.

I go red zone just thinking about BigGov bureaucrats ensconced in their cushy little paper pushing cubicles counting down the minutes until their next vacation and early retirements.

I want garbage collectors and roofers to get what lazy ass BigGov slackers get. Garbage guys and roofers actually do something meaningful and important.

It is a silly comparison because it doesn’t compare salaries for similar levels of skill and work.

The government has reached a point where most of the very low paid, low skill work is hired out to private contractors. They don’t hire people to empty the trash cans and sweep the floors, they hire the private sector for that.

Another reason why so many connected to the government tax teet feedbag are doing and saying everything they can to discredit Trump.

Hundreds of thousands of bureaucrats know damn well Trump will be coming with a big loud chainsaw to cut waste, fraud and corruption.

They have damn good reason to be concerned.

Thank you ...

It is well known that those government employees that work for the defense department (mathematicians, engineers, etc.) could make more money as a contractor ... hands down. But those who choose govt work often do it for the work ... there is more opportunity to engage in basic research where the point is to progress the science, than in the private sector where the main focus is to take that good science and turn it into a product to sell.

My consulting Company did lots of Salary surveys for Cities, counties, and Agnecies. In the 90’s it was 120% for than the same job in the private sector, in the 2000’s it rose to 140%. And this was at the State level. We have over 90 trillion of unfunded liability! So who is going to pay for the Government pensions? The Chinese?

The whole damn world is upside down...................

Back before we politicians receiving massive contributions from government employee unions and unionized government employees plying their inside outside scam on wage negotiations, government jobs paid less than private sector jobs, but the jobs were low stress, you had the job security because of government labor laws and you never got laid off, you had great benefits and you got yo retire after 20 years of service.

Now the government jobs are even more cushy and the pay is much higher than comparable private sector jobs

There is no comparison between productivity. Private sectors workers are getting worked to the bone while having their quality of life and benefit and retirement packages cut to the bone.

The government has no concept of productivity and the benefits and retirement are obscene and often abused by jacking up and inflation last year income with overtime and other tricks to allow government workers to retire with a pension compensation based on twice their true salary

Sounds like the private sector is screwing their workers. The CEOs certainly aren’t hurting. Perhaps asking the companies why they are paying their workers pittance should be the first question.

Dumb. As soon as that happens the entire private sector dies too. You really think that is the right way to go? Some here live in this unrealistic view of the world. We are too far interconnected for this to turn out successful.

Stop being such a sheep. So you need the Federal Government to manage everything in your life? Are you in a Federal Prison? America became the world's largest economy, was growing fastest and had greatest increases in productivity when the Federal Government was less than 2% of US GDP. Money was backed by gold, there was no IRS, no Federal Reserve, no Department of Homeland Security. The services every citizen uses regularly are provided by local governments - or at most, the State.
