Paris (AFP) - Gerard Depardieu played a Frenchman desperate to do anything to live in America in the 1990 movie "Green Card", but in a new interview, he shows little love for the US. "The US? They're a people who have constantly destroyed others," the 66-year-old actor railed in a broadcast Thursday by Paris radio station France Inter, taken from an interview he gave the day before to Russian journalists in Moscow. "They fought each other, destroyed the Indians, after that they perpetrated slavery, then there was the civil war," he said. "After that, they were the first to use the atomic bomb...No, I prefer being Russian."

IO just posted this in another thread, but it’s appropriate in this one, too.

“[T]here seems to have been an actual decline in rational thinking. The United States had become a place where entertainers and professional athletes were mistaken for people of importance. They were idolized and treated as leaders; their opinions were sought on everything and they took themselves just as seriously”

Including those nasty Germans that took over your country 75 years ago. Maybe the next time your country becomes occupied, we'll let you handle it.

What happens when that Hollywood career doesn't take off.

I still remember Depardieu’s drunken appearance at the New York Film Festival - years ago! - for the premiere of “The Last Metro.” Catherine Deneuve stopped him from falling into the orchestra pit while Truffaut stood by looking small and bewildered.

He's still a better actor than most Hollywood morons.

He’s apparently never studied Russian history, empire, USSR, or post Soviet, if he thinks American is destructive, and Russia is not. Russia was once called the prison of nations.

I remember a political cartoon from the 1960s. Charles de Gaulle is standing in front of this cemetery and proclaims...

“Why do you AMERICANS always stay where you are not wanted!”

He conveniently overlooks all the atrocities committed by the Russian soviets and czars over the last 1000 years. Stalin killed 20 million Ukrainian’s just in a 5 year span which was far more than were killed by the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Maybe he is unaware of the history of the former French Empire. I'm sure they treated all of their slaves just like their own kids.

Next time France is overrun, don't call us.
