PORTLAND, Ore. Real-life hero and Army veteran Chris Mintz, who took seven gunshot wounds while protecting classmates at an Oregon college last week, says he considers himself truly blessed to get treatment in a civilian hospital.
As I got in the ambulance, I kept thinking to myself, Dear God, please dont let them take me to a VA hospital. I dont want to die waiting for treatment,' Mintz told reporters from his bedside at Mercy Medical Center, where nurses actually check on him periodically to ask whether he needs anything, such as a blanket or a snack from the cafeteria, and bring it back to him within minutes, despite him not filling out the proper DA-7022 Form, Meal Replenishment paperwork. When I think about my brothers and sisters in arms that started waiting for Veterans Affairs service before I was shot, and will still be in the waiting room after Im discharged, I have flashbacks of my week-long VA eye exam.
In recognition of Mintzs heroism, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter offered to transfer Mintz to any active military hospital of his choice for continued care, sources confirmed. No thanks, Mintz reportedly said, according to an unnamed physical therapist who started working with the Army veteran almost immediately after a doctor requested his services instead of waiting for paperwork to make it through the system over a period of five to seven months. If I cant stay in a civilian hospital, just go ahead and drop me off at my car and Ill drive home.
While many have speculated about the VAs response to Mintzs statements, the department has so far remained silent. When reporters attempted to reach the VA for comment, they were put on hold, then after a seven-hour wait, the line was cut off.

Mintz, who has shown never-ending selflessness, says that he hopes to recover soon.
The faster Im out of here, the faster I can start repaying them for my GI Bill, Mintz said. After getting dropped from my classes because I have not attended over the past few days, the VA wants its money back.

I was in the Dallas VA Hospital last month. Filthy room, had to beg for drinking water and other things and the food was pretty much inedible.
This guy has great judgement. He attacked the murderer and he has an accrate fear of the VA. The VA continues its war against veterans in asking for its money back.
Sorry you had problems.

This guy is awesome.
I’m sure that this is satire, but the VA is government run healthcare and is a microcosm of what healthcare will be like when the government runs it all.
V A ping.

Some of the patriots in Roseburg, OR should include that sign with their other unwelcome signs for Obumble’s visit this Friday.
You’re correct. The Duffle Blog is a satire military news website. In any case, I’m sure he would prefer civilian hospital treatment.
“...they were put on hold, then after a seven-hour wait, the line was cut off.
Along with the line about missing class and dropping the loan, I’m guessing this is a satire site? Although it is getting REALLY hard to tell anymore!
I hope this thread is read by Donald Trump and/or his staff!!!
I think this is a satire, because the site asks me if I want to see more hilarious stories, and there are offerings such as Fort Hood getting a 1-and-a-half star high score on Yelp.

Thanks for the clarification. I recall reading some online proceedings about healthcare in England. Some councilman was lamenting that it can take up to 11 months for a hearing test (just a TEST - no procedure or anything, just listen to the tones). He said something like “It is deplorable that it takes this long in some of our counties. There is no reason it can’t be done within five weeks like those living in London enjoy.” (Again - a hearing TEST mind you!)
Absolutely ridiculous. Veterans waiting for primary care appointments often wait up to four months depending on geographic location. The Choice program is supposed to provide “coverage” to see a civilian doctor, but majority of them have refused to see veterans under the program.
That kid standing in the corner while others were getting shot and killed is going to be a head case forever.
Wish the original poster had put (satire) in the title. This just makes people go off half cocked and look stupid.
Perhaps he should have. I knew this was satire as soon as I saw the headline. I read Duffle Blog regularly, but it certainly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and especially if they have never experienced being in.
One more reason to vote for Trump...
