Culver Academies opts to pull firearms from campus security guards

CULVER, Ind. (21Alive) -- A prestigious school west of Fort Wayne, known for its military disciplines, is causing a stir with a policy change regarding firearms.

That change comes near the time of the latest terrible school massacre in the U.S.

Considering Culver's roots as a military school dating back to 1894, it was a surprise when last week Culver Academies school officials announced security officers would no longer carry weapons.

The school administration declined to talk on camera and said allowing us to interview students would go against the best interest of their safety.

A statement released by Culver, reads in part, "We decided that the policy of having our security officers carry side arms was not a practice we wanted to support any longer."

"We came to believe that the danger of having loaded firearms on campus outweighed the potential benefit of having armed security officers."

It's a story with unusual timing.

That awful school shooting erupted in Roseberg Oregon a couple days later, in a gun free zone, where school security there could not present an armed resistance.

Culver officials say they want security staff here to be approachable, not intimidating figures to students.

The school will rely on the nearby Culver Municipal Police Department, the Marshall County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana State Police, who are "only minutes away in an emergency."

"But that is not a role we need our security officers to play."

Culver's security officers now carry batons and mace, but not one retired Indiana State Police officer, who resigned his post following the change, saying he no longer believes it's a safe atmosphere for someone in uniform.

We caught up with a couple of folks in the town of Culver nearby, who think the change is a big mistake.

"I do believe as security, if they're going to be able to stop something like that, they're going to have to have weapons and that's, you know, we're talking sidearms, we're not talking you know, automatic weapons or anything of that nature," Ron Hodges of Plymouth said.

"They're claiming that the Culver Police Department is only 5 minutes away, well, how many kids can a mad man with an AK 47, how many kids can he take out in 5 minutes. I don't know, I don't want to know," Kathleen Tanguy, Culver Resident said.

If something happens this “school” should be sued out of existence.

Go to the houses of the leadership and start a small fire, say in a trash can next to a couch. When they go for a fire extinguisher, tell the, too bad. The fire dept is only minutes away. Stand around as watch as the couch goes up, then the living room, then the kitchen, etc. not to worry, the fire dept is here, now they are asking if anyone is inside, doing a quick 360 then getting water on the fire. Don’t worry half you stuff is burnt up the rest is destroyed by smoke or water.

No different than what they are proposing for the school.

I am a 1981 CMA Summer School graduate (Troop B).

This is freaking insane. What has happened to the leadership there?

I’m a Culver grad - ‘63, 2nd Lt., Black Horse Troop, Lancers.

This is sickening and I think most of my classmates will agree - I just forwarded to our Regimental Commander so our class should know about this soon.

A literal trumpet-blast invitation, “Come here maniacs, shoot us!” Total insanity. While my father gave me my first rifle/shotgun (O/U .22/.410) at 12, it was at Culver where I really learned to shoot. Maybe they’ll be changing the .22 rifles in the ROTC shooting classes to Daisy BB guns because it’s too dangerous to have real guns on campus...........

If, God forbid, a mass shooting should follow, heads will roll.......

The school has gone liberal in so many ways in the last 30 years, I really can’t support it anymore.........

” What has happened to the leadership there?”

Take a look at the Dean of Faculty. There is your answer.

It seems to be a liberal philosophy that anyone who chooses a career involving guns (police, armed forces, security guards) are whackos, as opposed to real whackos who are obviously victims of society. When we teach society to distrust our protectors, we are in deep doo-doo.

It would certainly enhance the safety of the guards, since, in a crisis, they’d have an excuse to run like h*ll.

My family has roots with CMA that go back 100 years.

I have many vile personal opinions of the current administration that are not fit for print.

Needless to say, life insurance beneficiaries and wills have been changed up and down the family tree.

Gun-Free Zones are nothing more than Government sponsored and sanctioned KILLING FIELDS.

Our President is protected with guns.
Congress is protected with guns.
Governors are protected with guns.
Celebrities are protected using guns.
Sporting events are protected with guns.
Jewelry stores are protected with guns.
Banks are protected with guns.
Office buildings are protected with guns.
Factories are protected with guns.
Our Courts are protected with guns.

And yet, we defend our children with a sign that reads:

"This Is A Gun Free Zone"

.....and then call someone with a gun if there's an emergency.

Pardon me, but this is F***ING STUPID.

If it's good enough for our children, then each and every entity named above should be stripped of their gun protection. Let's see how long the bastards in our Government and corrupt court system survive! Lord knows they've pissed off damn' near every working & taxpaying American!!!!

We have 8 wonderful grown children - and while my years there were some of the best of my life - I didn’t want any of our kids to go there - even if they had been offered full scholarships........

It’s a bastion of liberalism now.......why I didn’t want to go to my 50th reunion in spite of a strong desire to see some of my great classmates.......who are now great conservatives.........

I am in bizzaro world. Where was this campus boss during the Cold War? Cause getting rid of our nukes like the Soviets wanted wasn’t what stopped it.

Golly gee, America. If only we had been nicer to bin Laden he wouldn’t have smashed planes into our buildings. (Sound of wringing sweaty hands)

I just know getting rid of armed security guards will do so much to prevent crazy young guys from shooting up the school.
