RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Officials at the South Carolina Emergency Management Division say Beaver Creek Dam at Wildewood will fail soon.

SCEMD says they are initiating a controlled breach to relieve pressure and prevent further flooding.

Residents in the area will be contacted to begin evacuations of the lower regions at Beaver Creek.

Officials note that the evacuations are not mandatory. Anyone who evacuates the area would have to go to A.C. Flora High or make their own arrangements.

What?! From an engineering perspective, backfilling or reinforcing this dam is straight forward. The Army Corps or Engineers could easily deal with this.

What is going on here?

Oh, SC voted against Obama, so they can drown. Got it.

PS Obama did declare a pro-forma “State of Emergency,” but apparently no funds have been allocated. Shock.

Midlands:

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division says 391 roads and 150 bridges are closed statewide.

According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation, Interstate 20 is closed at the Broad River Bridge near Columbia, this is between Exits 65 and 68, which are the Broad River Road and Monticello Road exits.

Interstate 26 is closed in both directions in Lexington County at the 108.8 mile marker, over the Saluda River near the I-126 exit.

Interstate 95 is closed between Florence and Orangeburg.

Gov Nikki Haley stated that this was a once in a thousand year flood. Unprecedented in South Carolina history. Written History that goes back damn near four hundred years and nothing like this has happened before. Oral history that goes back, what? A thousand or more? and nothing like this ever.
I cannot help but wonder if maybe this is God’s punishment for the desecration of the Confederate memorial and flag(s).
Hell, it is as good or better theory that GloBull Warming and or Climate change.
Maybe. Could be.

Al,

The extent of the flooding and road wash outs would hamper that plan. Many bridges and roads destroyed already.

Or maybe it’s just a monstrous flood. Happens.

The rain falls on the just and on the unjust, so be careful about blaming the Almighty when nature misbehaves.

It just seems like it won’t stop. Just more bad news of devastation. Hopefully in the morning things will start turning the other way. I’m thankful we and our critters are safe and dry!
