Paris’s first attempt at car-free day brings big drop in air and noise pollution
The Guardian ^ | October 2, 2015 | Kim Willsher

Paris’s “day without cars” last week led to such a dramatic drop in both air and noise pollution that the mayor’s office is now planning more vehicle-free days in the French capital. Airparif, which measures city pollution levels, said levels of nitrogen dioxide dropped by up to 40% in parts of the city on Sunday 27 September... Najdovski, a member of the Europe Ecology-Green (EELV) party, admitted he was disappointed that only one third of Paris was handed over to pedestrians and cyclists on 27 September... added: “My dream Paris would be a city without cars.

exactly this is to be expected, euro emissions standards are ten years behind the USA even Euro 6 which takes effect soon allows ten times the NOx as tier 2 bin 5. diesels are horribly polluting releasing many times more particulate matter per km than petrol and up too 100 times more NOx per km. since the vast majority of vehicles in europe are diesels due to diesel being taxed less per liter and the inherent efficiency of the diesel combustion cycle. banning diesel cars for a day would have a huge and immediate effect on ambient air pollution levels as the monitoring stations verified it was the expected result.

there is a reason VW cheated with the diesels they sent here our emissions laws state that any light duty car regardless of it’s fuel type must meet at least tier 2 bin 5 which petrol cars easily get with a 3 way catalyst. diesels to clean up to the exactly the same standard take a DPF, SCR NOx cat and a oxidation cat as well

VW cheated so they didn’t have to put in the SCR system.our laws are accurate make all vehicles meet the same standard why allow a whole class to emit more pollution simply to allow those drivers better fuel economy at the expense of everyone elses air quality. the law is simple every car regardless of fuel must meet a minimum standard to be sold here.petrol easily hits it and some go to tier 2 bin 2 which means the air coming out can actually be cleaner (less NOx, particulate,HC) than the air at the intake manifold due to the ambient city air being worse than the clean up standard for exhaust. diesels struggle to get to the minimum standard of T2B5 even with thousands in catalysts. Euro 4 ,5 standards are equivalent to 1980s n 90s here Europe’s air is loaded with particulates and Nox both of which cause smog so much on a typical day by afternoon the pollution levels are visible to the naked eyes

What about the pollution from the 1,000 cars that the French muzzies set on fire every month?

The economy likely didn’t do so well since many people couldn’t get to wherever they needed to go.

Sure, the pollution there is awful but what about the handicapped and elderly who can’t walk or ride bikes? What about the mama’s with little kids?

If that’s what they want, set off an EMP over Paris. Idiots

Cool, it'll free up the streets for mass pray-ins.

Q. Why are the streets of Paris lined with all those trees?
A. The Germans like to march in the shade.

From ‘same era’ (must remember whose turn it was ‘in the barrel’)

Q. How did the Germans invade Poland so effortlessly?
A. They marched in backwards and everyone thought they were leaving.
