LONDON: Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly sending 150,000 soldiers to Syria to wipe out the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

According to The Daily Star, he is apparently mounting an enormous military mission to take control of the terror group's stronghold of Raqqa.

Raqqa is the self-declared capital of ISIS which is patrolled by as many as 5,000 jihadi members.

Putin is set to mobilise 150,000 reservists whom he conscripted into the military earlier this week.

Possibly this is the worst time in history to take that position, but I do also.

Let these players balance out the blood and treasure that we have been assessed all these years, after years of our costly and unappreciated world police duty.

I figure these guys know how to use a phone. They can call us if the need proves itself. Meanwhile, under a Trump presidency, we can replenish and rebuild our military structure and material, enough to perform in the manner we may choose.

If we never get the 3:00 AM call from Putin, and Chung King, and EeeHawAttollah from Iran, we can suspect they may have something unfavorable in mind for us, and we can use this time to get prepared to be better prepared. Because we certainly are not, now!

I’d never live under that type of government

Aren’t Russia’s income taxes lower than the US’s?

“I was given to understand that it was a normal, scheduled call up”

So why does that mean they won’t be used for military purposes?

Is he sending in the B or C team?

More live the Freshmen Team, right off the potato and Borscht farms.

Soviet/Russian leaders like Stalin and Brezhnev used the poor Red Army reservists like cannon-fodder, first in the WW2 invasion of Finland where they were slaughtered, as they were later in Afghanistan.

Reservists also suffered high casualties in Chechnya were seasons Islamic jihadists chewed them up until Soviet military commanders started leveling the place. That stopped the rebels in their tracks and saved a lot of Red Army lives.

You can order a mobilization of 150,000 men, but it takes a lot of time to get them into physical shape, military training shape, equipped, moved into position, and put together in a Corps organization.

While Putin did an admirable job of creating an Air Bridge to Syria, it was small by scale compared to other Air Bridges in the Soviet past (to Angola, with 40,000 Cuban troops who turned the tide of battle in the communists favor), and even some Soviet Air Bridges to embattled Egypt over time.

(They had 3 Airborne Divisions ready to go there in the Oct. 1973 war and threatened to do so if Sharon destroyed the Egyptian 9th Army which he had surrounded on the Suez Canal. The US told the Israelis not to attack because we didn’t want a physical confrontation with the Soviets because we were not troopwise prepared to fight).

Putin will put in enough troops to do the job thoroughly if he wants to, but that also means destroying the non-Jihadist anti-Assad groups (our “friends”), and levelling everything in their path, collateral damage be damned and the words banned.

Personally, if I were Putin, I would level Raqqa, the ISIS capital in Syria, and then selectively hit every known ISIS held city/town with major air strikes.

Then ISIS would flee to Iraq and Mosul, hopefully opening up a convoy road target like the Highway of Death was in Kuwait in 1991.

However, that would put Soviet aircraft into US air operational space and the question is would we let Putin finish off ISIS in Syria, or would Obama pout and prance that this was in the US target area and let them escape.

Knowing Obama, he would let ISIS escape just to spite Putin because Putin out-commied him by his actions, Saul Alinsky be damned.

I suppose it doesn't. It's quite possible that Putin would send ground forces into Syria. He's got Duma authorization to do so. But I don't see the value in posting something in breaking news that is being reported by an obscure Indian rag which in turn is based on a British tabloid. And then discussing that as a fait accompli.

There's enough propaganda that has to be sifted through, on both the American and Russian sides without having to be bogged down with the tinfoil crowd and their 2+2 = 5 articles. You ever notice that a lot of material that is posted here has a recurring theme. The article starts out with a fact-based, declarative headline and then proceeds to give you a multi-paragraph explanation to prove the premise of the headline. Well, if the facts aren't self-evident then it's just an opinion piece.

It's possible Putin has cut a mutual nonaggression agreement with ISIS.

It seems Putin has a larger plan in mind:

1. He’ll bulk up in Syria after decimating ISIS in Syria
2. Then with Russia’s ally, IRAN, they will then split Iraq in half.

That may be fine with us because we have enough oil here now and the Russians will be the world’s anti-muzzie policeman for a while. They’ll become the hated target of the muzzies instead of us.

Maybe Bork Obunga is smarter than we think (in screwing up so much in the Middle East)?

Does anyone else see this scenario as I do?

Putin is the man...

I don't trust him and think what he's doing in ukraine is cynical, but on the matter of destroying the Islamic state -- on that matter -- I fully, completely support him

Russia calls up about 150,000 conscripts every fall and spring It is a routine biannual draft

I admit to coming in rather late to events of the last several days - I got swamped (again) with family matters (elderly parents needing help / care, mostly.) 300k conscripts a year seems like a LOT. Perhaps Putin's popularity doesn't translate into a lot of well motivated volunteers...

Obama is incredibly talented at losing friends and demotivating people -- look at all the US allies or potential allies he's lost.

Amazing

it takes real talent to do what he does

I don’t support the USA frittering away our GI’S and our treasure in the ssxt hole they call the Middle East whether it be Syria or Iraq.

Somewhat agree, but the US forces should be supporting Christians in Iraq and Syria and Lebanon and Israel and Pakistan

Yazidis and Mandaens too in the name of humanity, but Mooselimbs -- NO

What happens when Russia shoot down one of our planes, or kills or captures one of our troops. We have thousands there now. This is crazy crazy crazy. Everyone can see that they’re ultimately going to hook up with Iran.

Putin’s aim will be towards the south — he saw NATO rattling a sword and he now wants to return to what Russia has been focused on since 1453 — recapturing Constantinople

Putin kicked Berry’s pathetic ass and now he’s going to kick Berry’s creation in the ass. It’s like a grown man dealing with a newborn baby.

Indeed. Uncle Volodya has forgotten more about power than Little Barry knows.
