At the least it should be compared per capita, and include other kinds of murder and mayhem. It generally turns out that where guns are genuinely scarce due to a concerted enough effort to eliminate them, which is a pipe dream in the USA, stabbings enter the picture to make up for it. Cain will strive to murder Abel one way if not another. Might as well at least let Abel be armed and have a fighting chance.
Right - it’s the media who compare the US to other countries in gun deaths. I don’t think you can really use per capita because it favors those smaller countries.
Or cutting the head off a soldier i.e. Lee Rigby in broad daylight on a street in London in front of many UNARMED onlookers.
In many U.S. cities those Islamic pos trying to cut the head off of a soldier would have been ventilated by armed citizens.
