US politicians offer neither consensus nor solutions on Syria (Carly, Jeb, Kasich want No-Fly Zone)

For years, Republicans have criticised Barack Obama for not doing more to stop the brutalities carried out by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and to fight Isis. But what they think Obama should do and what the long-term solution might be remained hazy.

-snip-

Republican rising star Carly Fiorina had already called on the US to enforce a no-fly zone in Syria to protect US-backed rebel fighters, as had Jeb Bush in unequivocal terms. On Friday, another Republican presidential contender joined their camp: “You enter that no-fly zone, you enter at your own peril,” said Governor John Kasich. “No more red lines, no more looking the other way. If any hostile aircraft should enter that, there will be a great consequence to them.”

Republicans generally favour more intervention in Syria, but there are still plenty of voices in the party objecting to such moves, particularly in the party’s anti-interventionist arm. After Fiorina’s call was telegraphed to the public, reaction among conservatives was mixed to say the least, with one prominent rightwing blogger calling Fiorina’s support for a no-fly zone “a borderline nutty overcorrection to Obama’s passivity”.

‘No Fly Zones’ cost money. What are they going to cut to pay for one?
If they don’t say then they aren’t serious.

Our President has to out-think Putin.

We’re screwed.

it seems to me that a “no fly” zone would provide an area of refuge for ISIS and murderous rebels.

I don’t see how we could enforce a no fly zone in that situation and I wouldn’t think our partners would help us.

ISIS doesn’t have an air force. A no fly zone doesn’t stop ISIS from slaughtering people on the ground.
And trying to create one means we risk Syria becoming the flash point of world war 3, where the American fascist fights the resurgent Russian empire, while warriors of the Islamic caliphate take over Europe and overthrow one of the last secular dictators in the Middle East.
We should be supporting Russian efforts, not hindering them.

“it seems to me that a “no fly” zone would provide an area of refuge for ISIS and murderous rebels.”

Precisely what I was thinking.

May be wrong but isn’t the no-fly zone to stop Assad from dropping barrel bombs on his “own people”, but in most cases they are trying to kill ISIS?

And wonder why wasn’t Trump’s position mentioned in this article? He only went up a few points, so they think he’s out? Or his non-intervention stance might actually bump him up?

Don’t pick this fight. Russia is waiting for it and wanting it.

We have no national interest in Syria. We should have stayed out of it entirely.

We should not have helped to overthrow Quaddafi. That resulted in chaos and four dead Americans.

Anyone who believes there are moderates worth arming in Syria needs to be kept away from decision making.

"ISIS doesn’t have an air force."

No but Russia does. ISIS is our ally in the middle east so a no fly zone is needed to protect ISIS from Russian bombers. It seems we have switched sides in the "War on Terror" and we now side with the terrorists.

We should not have invaded Iraq. The invasion of Iraq started this mess and now the Middle East and North Africa is on fire. And the fire is spreading.

Firstly get rid of the insane notion of Democracy in a Islamic nation. Koranic doctrine and democracy are incompatible with each other. An Islamic nation will always have a dictator, king, corrupt democracy which in effect is a dictatorship, or a theocracy masquerading as democracy.

Thus the only logical way to deal with Islamic nations is to support the dictator, corrupt democracy, or king that supports our interests. Under no circumstances should we support a theocratic dictator as in Iran. They want to kill us.

Yeah, let’s go to war with Russia over Syria. Let’s tell Vlad that he can’t fly his planes over Syria. Let’s shoot down some Russian bombers. Then what?

WWIII, that’s what.

But I don’t think that would happen. I think President Carly/Yeb/John/Hillary would ring up Premier Putin and politely ask Premier Putin to please not fly any of his mean, ol’ nasty warcraft over their “no-fly” zones, and Putin would simply say “OK”. End of story.

Either that, or none of them really care whether they start WWIII or not.

If anything, they should offer Vlad some more help in bombing ISIS, except of course he’s not going to want any help, because by smashing ISIS all by himself he gets his hands on the Middle-East control levers all by himself.

I still think North Korea will attack before he’s gone.
