CHARLESTON, W.Va. Former President Bill Clinton, in a keynote address to West Virginia Democrats on Friday night, touched on background checks for gun owners in the wake of the Oregon community college mass shooting.
Those of us who grew up in hunting countryand who believe the 2nd Amendment guarantees everybody the right to keep a gun to go hunting, to sports shoot and to protect themselves and their familiesmost of us think its crazy that we dont do background checks, Clinton said.

John Lotts More Guns, Less Crime revives the wisdom of the past by using the latest tools of social science. By constructing careful statistical models and deploying a wealth of crime data he shows that laws permitting the carrying of concealed weapons actually lead to a drop in crime in the jurisdictions that enact them. . . . By providing strong empirical evidence that yet another liberal policy is a cause of the very evil it purports to cure, he has permanently changed the terms of debate on gun control. . . . Lotts work is a model of the meticulous application of economics and statistics to law and policy.

“... But while DOJ figures show that the rate of handgun sales has grown 250% since 2008, in the same period violent crime fell 23%, murder 24%, rapes 33% and even aggravated assaults fell 20%.
Oh, and firearm homicides fell 19%.
To echo the title of a well-known and ridiculously well-researched book, we have more guns and less crime. That a regression analysis shows a strong correlation between handgun sales and falling crime (with statistically small odds that the covariance was based on random chance) positively certifies that California is safer when its people exercise their right to own the most effective tool available to defend themselves or their families.”
