Peeple CEO defends new app after backlash from critics

NEW YORK — The CEO of the new app called Peeple, a "Yelp for humans," is defending her new product after critics called it “irresponsible “and “the third circle of hell.”

Peeple, slated to launch in November, lets mobile users rate the people they know personally, professionally and romantically. According to the app’s founders Julia Cordray and Nicole McCullough, the app was created to “find the good” in people and not as a cyber bullying tool. The women documented the development of the app in a YouTube series.

“I think this app does really help find the best in each of us but it would be pointless if it was all positive,” Cordray said in the online documentary.

Critics slammed Peeple, calling it “irresponsible “and “the third circle of hell.” The response was so aggressive, the company’s CEO attempted to shut off the comments section of their Facebook page — an attempt that was met with irony.

One critic tweeted, “founder of #peeple, an app designed to collect unsolicited feedback doesn't appear to like unsolicited feedback.”

In a statement to PIX11 News, Peeple CEO Julia Cordray responded to the backlash.

“With any new concept there is naturally fear. When the people found out that the earth was round instead of flat and that we revolved around the sun instead of the sun revolving around us naturally people were upset and confused and they pushed back with all that they had,” she said.

Don't like it, don't use the app!

In Soviet Russia, app uses YOU!

Absolutely moronic.
I cannot imagine this app used for anything but gossip, deriding others based on half-truths, or getting back at people for perceived slights.
These women are sick.
If you think someone is a good person, you’re probably content knowing that fact. The only time most will use this is to get revenge on others. Sounds like a teenage girl nightmare waiting to happen.
Disgusting.

Except for the PR material that indicates that you will not in fact have recourse to alter this w/o hiring a lawyer...

But yes, you will have *legal* recourse.

The legal department for this company will dwarf every single other department. By far.

And for everyone who simply can’t afford to hire a lawyer to change the ‘he’s a pedophile’ ratings...well, tough luck...

"Advances in technology will greatly increase the speed and volume of human communications. And invariably more and more of these communications will go awry. Hence there will be no end to lawyers and lawyering"

John Nesbitt, Megatrends, 1984

Was assigned to read it in a class when I was 21 and that line still sticks in my head all these years later.

That'll be part of the class action lawsuit that eventually rolls through and sucks up any income the app (HA) generates.

You send a letter notifying them of the libelous information on the website and demand a takedown, no great lawyer fees involved. If they fail to take it down, in a few weeks some lawyer will get tweaked on the service and they'll start the class action ball rolling.

This is a controversy designed to generate publicity for the app, really nothing more.

That's assuming that they don't go belly up as soon as People Magazine sues them for using their trademarked name.

According to a previous poster, I stand corrected.

You’ll likely NOT have any legal recourse against them for anything nasty that gets posted about you.

See post 18:

So, let the games begin.

You will play the game even if you don’t wish to.

For the immunization to stand, the site has to take down the information when notified (IE: you using just a blanket form to demand removal.) If they let it stand, they are JOINING with the user in the libel suit that will follow (and believe me, it will be a class action lawsuit which will ruin the company very quickly.)

I’m on the flip side of this with eBay - they get a bogus copyright infringement declaration, they remove the item immediately and penalize the seller, no questions asked, no recourse for the seller EXCEPT for them to plead with the complainer to tell eBay everything is okay again.

(In eBay’s case, this too will eventually go into a class action suit, as they aren’t just taking down the offending item, they are taking action against the seller with no recourse other than begging some third party to act on their behalf.)

For the average peasant. It’s best NOT to have anyone put up nastygrams.

This will be the equivalent of the bathroom stall ‘information’.

And she'll receive full protection from slander and libel lawsuits courtesy of the US government via the dept. of just us.

Just another brownshirt data mining smoke out operation disguised as an “app”.

Yes, it is like the bathroom stall, and will likely fail spectacularly. Fail well enough to prevent the next generation of this type of app from coming into being, run by a ‘caring company’ ‘who listens to the viewpoints of the public’ and allows ‘unlimited removal of derogatory information.’

Either this goes live and blows up, or it will be the next feature on Facebook - which would you prefer?

But I learned long ago that we never get what we want...

There is no opt out. People will comment on you whether you like it or not.

This is the kind of thing that will destroy the internet, Apple should be wary.

Disputes will escalate to violence and people’ lives will be ruined over lies. Schools will be chaos.

You are right, Ebay takes down copyrighted stuff. I’ve seen it happen.

Craigslist also takes down racist ads in jobs and roommates.

Nothing to see here but more STUPIDITY from STUPID people.

They also take down stuff people claim as copyright; one of the most infamous things on eBay was Garth Brook's agency used to issue takedown notices for every used CD of his, claiming he owned the copyright to the work and therefore could prevent it from being listed on eBay.
