House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz is planning to run for House speaker, taking on Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy in what appears to be a long-shot bid to lead House Republicans, according to multiple sources.
The Utah Republican, first elected to Congress in 2008, is launching a campaign less than a week before the Oct. 8 leadership elections for the House GOP Conference. The date for a floor vote to pick the next speaker has not been set yet.
McCarthy (R-Calif.) is the overwhelming favorite to win, and its unclear how many votes Chaffetz can garner.
Chaffetz's office would not comment.
The last-minute move by the fourth-term lawmaker underscores frustration among some members of the Republican Conference with the current choices to lead the conference after Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) leaves at the end of the month. Boehner announced last week he is resigning effective Oct. 30 amid growing discontentment among conservatives with his decisions on major policy questions, including government funding, the Ex-Im Bank and boosting the debt ceiling. All of those issues confront Republicans this fall.

It was Chaffetz who told Mark Meadows his committee chair position was being pulled for going against Boehner.
In addition, it was Kevin McCarthy who ordered Chaffetz to pull the committee job.
I was supporting Brat for speaker. But I’ve reconsidered and decided that McCarthy is the man to support.
All things being equal, I want the speaker who will do the most damage to the gop faction of the uniparty. McCarthy is uniquely qualified.
I guess McCarthy is your man then. Perfection or bust
For a moment I actually wondered if you were pulling my leg...ie
Jewish convert to Mormon.
Place kicker for BYU football.
Nope you were not.
BTW I have nothing against Mormons personally, and my saviour was Jewish.
Reminds me of the joke from the movie Airplane among other things
The lady asked for something light to read, the stuartist suggested a small leaflet entitled famous Jewish Sports Legends
No. He’s a phony.
What about Daniel Webster?
He passed away a while ago. I like his dictionary.
Born: January 18, 1782, Salisbury, NH
Died: October 24, 1852, Marshfield, MA
Better than McCarthy (and Amash).
Not sure if better than Webster.
I suppose a young gal elected to the house in 2014 would be out of the question. But I sure do like Mia Love, from Utah.

Chaffetz is Mr. Internet Taxation. He’d take people like me who can’t get payroll jobs in this wonderful economy and have to sell online and he’d put us at the mercy of 9000 different taxing jurisdictions, with the potential of having to file hundreds of quarterly returns all over the country. No thanks.
Say what you want about Boehner, he always made it clear that Internet taxation—which has passed the Senate multiple times—was a nonstarter in the House.
