Oregon shooting: 13 legally purchased weapons found in gunman's cache
The Manchester Guardian ^ | October 2, 2015 | Lauren Gambino and Ben Quinn with Jason Wilson in Roseburg

Roseburg grapples with grief and indignation as Obama’s call for US gun control collides with horrifying new details of another mass shooting.

A cache of 13 weapons has been discovered in the possession of gunman who opened fire on a writing class at a community college in rural Oregon on Thursday, killing nine people and injuring seven in the deadliest mass shooting in the state’s history.

Seven weapons were recovered at the gunman’s home, in addition to the six weapons that were recovered on the campus of Umpqua Community College, Celinez Nunez, of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), told reporters during a Friday morning press briefing. A bulletproof jacket and five extra magazines were also recovered at the scene in Roseburg, Oregon, where residents, students, survivors and families were grappling with grief and indignation.

All 13 weapons were purchased legally by the shooter or a family member in the last three years, Nunez said, as a national debate reignited over long languishing gun control reforms. The Douglas County Sheriff’s department said on Twitter that investigators recovered five pistols and one rifle from the crime scene.

Douglas county sheriff John Hanlin said during the press conference that officials were still working to notify victims next-of-kin and said the medical examiner’s office was expected to release their names and brief biographies Friday afternoon.

Hanlin has refused to name the gunman out of deference to the victims and their families, and chastised the media for reporting his name, saying it “glorified” a murderer....

BTW did you have a reason to mention homosexuality? As news filtered out and it sounded like this wasn’t jihad but the killer was targeting Christians, the first thing that popped into my head was angry homosexual, given the hostility toward Christians over gay marriage. Haven’t seen anything along those lines, but there must be a reason to target Christians.

Thanks. I forgot about that. I don’t know why they count the murderers in these things.

It is a problem. In my case, I did what I could to keep my weapons out of my son’s possession, and if I had had to would have turned him in even though he hadn’t done anything yet. The thing is this was not normal behavior for him, and thank God he is back to normal now.

This is the crux of the so called Mental illness concern. Charles Krauthammer said (when speaking about a different case of FOX) that in that case, even if the family wanted to involve the mental health agency they were not able to do it until a crime had been committed.

Not entirely true. Thus far there's no indication the family was concerned, but if they were the could have contacted the police with the concerns. Would be a high standard, but if legitimate they likely would have in a trip to a hospital ER where, if legitimate, as assessment would be done. But that's a high bar.

A bigger problem, because of privacy concerns many states do not turn over records of commitments to the Feds, so they won't appear on instant check. A crime to lie on the form, but the sale will be made.

I don't think the list idea works, this really is a medical issue, and imo the standard of involuntary commitment or (usually and) danger to self and others is reasonable. Though there should be a way to cure it, which I don't think exists in the Federal system. I'm not sure a teen who attempts suicide should necessarily be barred from owning firearms. Don't think non violent felonies should either.

Yes, during the very early 60’s in high school not one friend of mine owned a pistol or would have ever thought of carrying a pistol to high school. A number had a shotgun or 22 their dad had bought them for hunting. Also in the mid 60’s no one I knew had a gun in college. In 70-72 the army sent me back to college and we went pheasant hunting as it was Nebraska. We kept our guns in our apartments unless hunting or target shooting. We had none of these killings.

This is exactly what needs to be done. Strike them from history and punish their friends, family and associates with the same as well as loss of any and all government freebees.

Make it law.
And so shall it be done

While I agree as to the widespread publicity, the gunman’s name provides access to information as to motivation and actions which the police may or may not pick up.

Investigative assistance publicity worked out so well in Ferguson with the hands up testament doctrinization nationwide/s.
Keep it police business. The police know how to run these things down and handle it if left alone.

What does the left want to do to the citizens that they can’t do while the citizens are still armed?

Couldn’t agree more. Gun control is not about what they have done to us, it’s about what they want to do to us.

With no public disclosure? If the Obama administration had that power, let me present you Major Nathan Hackett, a conservative Evangelical christian from Kentucky. Worked on the Bush campaign, both of them.

With the information kept non public, you prove me wrong how?

And that rumor that he killed soldiers at Ft Hood, we both know he was attacking an Democrat campaign office in Killean. Public information should be public, at the proper time.

The Sheriff refused to state the shooters name? That’s all fine and good. But before the sun set the entire planet knew the shooters name, had his images/photos and knew most of his background, family etc.

Symbolism over reality. No?

Yes,

I was basing my comment on another thread that indicated there was trouble with the guy in high school. From what I have seen since, there is apparently no evidence of mental illness. It seems like there should be. But if not, then the mental illness is not a way to stop him.

Only thing left (since I do not support confiscation and police state) would be more security on campus and more private carry.

When I was in high school in the mid 1970s my friends and I all brought our hunting rifles to school during deer season. We kept them in our vehicles during the day, but frequently showed them off to teachers and friends in the parking lot at lunch. Immediately after school let out, we would head out to our deer blinds.

Mass shootings were never an issue back then, because there were no "gun free zones" where criminals and terrorists would have the peace of mind of knowing that all of their victims would be unarmed.

I carried my .22 target rifle through the school because the range was in the basement, and the rifle team sold ammo to raise money.

Symbolism over reality. No?

In the shooter's own words:

"A man who was known by no one, is now known by everyone. His face splashed across every screen, his name across the lips of every person on the planet, all in the course of one day. Seems the more people you kill, the more your're in the limelight."

I agree with the Sheriff. Don't give the son of a bitch what he wanted and encourage more nut cases to emulate him.

Did the Sheriff stop any of that from occurring?

No he did not.
