UCLA pre-med student charged in killing (Dreamers?)

Firefighters found Andrea DelVesco's body in a burning Westwood apartment a block from the campus, where she was a fourth-year psychology student.

As details about her life emerged, Los Angeles police detectives delved into whether the killing was tied to her recent prosecution on charges of possessing a cocktail of party drugs, including Ecstasy and meth.

But on Tuesday, prosecutors charged Alberto Hinojosa Medina and Eric Marquez — both 22-year-old students — with murder in DelVesco's death, saying Medina stabbed her after burglarizing a nearby apartment and then breaking into her home.

Medina is also accused of setting fire to the apartment on Roebling Avenue before fleeing.

One result of the success of DNA ID technology in criminal prosecutions has been the use of arson at crime scenes.

Clearly some kind of drug ring. She get's popped and there's fear she's going to roll over.

"Court records show DelVesco (victim) was charged this summer with drug possession. She pleaded not guilty and was scheduled to appear in court last week, the district attorney's office said"

Marquez's attorney, Steve Cron, argued that his client — a senior in pre-med at UCLA — should be granted bail because he has no prior criminal record. Marquez, the attorney said, is accused of aiding and abetting, not carrying out the killing.

“He is someone who has never been in trouble before,” Cron said.

Just burglary and aiding and abetting a murder, nope, no problemo.

These two traveled from Fresno to LA for a burglary? It's about 200 miles or so one way.

At least one of them had an apartment here. Both were students.

When they reference home in Fresno, it could be his parents home he grew up in. He may also live down here too. That wasn’t clarified. Where the suspect arrested in Fresno went to school... It likely could have been down here.

After committing a high level crime, it wouldn’t be unusual to head away from the region to avoid capture.

Perhaps that will come out over time.

Prosecutors would have much rather preferred to get her suppliers than have to prosecute her. But they WOULD have prosecuted her if she refused to roll over.

Also, he needs time to complete his med school applications.

"These two traveled from Fresno to LA for a burglary?"

One of the perps was a local. The two perps were old friends. My money is on either a hit on her to keep her quiet, or these two perps were out to rob her supply not knowing she had already been busted.
