Billionaire Lifts Marco Rubio, Politically and Personally
http://www.nytimes.com ^ | May 9, 2015 | MICHAEL BARBARO and STEVE EDER

MIAMI — One day in the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Marco Rubio, the young speaker of the House, strayed from the legislative proceedings to single out a lanky, silver-haired man seated in the balcony: a billionaire auto dealer named Norman Braman.

This man, Mr. Rubio said in effusive remarks in 2008, was no ordinary billionaire, hoarding his cash or using it to pursue selfish passions.

“He’s used it,” Mr. Rubio said, “to enrich the lives of so many people whose names you will never know.” As it turned out, one of the people enriched was Mr. Rubio himself.

As Mr. Rubio has ascended in the ranks of Republican politics, Mr. Braman has emerged as a remarkable and unique patron. He has bankrolled Mr. Rubio’s campaigns. He has financed Mr. Rubio’s legislative agenda. And, at the same time, he has subsidized Mr. Rubio’s personal finances, as the rising politician and his wife grappled with heavy debt and big swings in their income.

Now, with Mr. Rubio vaulting ahead of much of the Republican presidential field, Mr. Braman is poised to play an even larger part and become Mr. Rubio’s single biggest campaign donor, with an expected outlay of approximately $10 million for the senator’s pursuit of the White House.

Marco Rubio, totally controlled. Good profile of him and his "personal banker".

The more I hear Marco's own words, the less I trust the jerk. (I almost said SOB, but I don't want to insult his mother)

Swallowing the New York Slimes agenda like an obedient sheep. Nice.

Are you opposed to the Koch brothers as well, funding politicians with their money?

FWIW, my candidate is not Marco Rubio. But slamming Rubio because he has some wealthy patrons is just progressive-inspired foolishness.

I slammed Rubio for his characterization of “millionaires”. Rubio makes me like him less and less the more I hear from him.

Which words, specifically?

He's in the same place as Jebby, they left the people that could get them some where, even if we don't want them...

Rubio snuggled up to McTurtle and forgot about his base of people that would vote for him....

Jebby did the same thing, took to the mexicans thinking they could put him in the White House, most of them probably illegal, and forgot his voting base of American people...

They both are going out...and with Jebby, we don't want anymore bushes...and with Rubio, he's a member of the gang of eight, and we don't want him either...

My preferred candidate, Ted Cruz, is also the recipient of high dollar donations from very wealthy people.

Has FR become opposed to wealthy people now?

Apparently I erred, quoting the article and thinking it was a Rubio quote. The offending phrase is:

This man, Mr. Rubio said in effusive remarks in 2008, was no ordinary billionaire, hoarding his cash or using it to pursue selfish passions.

The full article, of course, doesn't include anything supporting the author's characterization.

Mea Culpa.

Funny, in the 80s Noran Braman owned the Philadelphia Eagles. Head coach Buddy Ryan hated him so much he wouldn’t say his name. He called him “that guy in France”. Then he let a bunch of Hall of Famers or borderline players walk away in free agency (people like Reggie White for crying out loud!) to save a buck. He’s not a beloved man in Philadelphia. Not that Rubio or any republican will ever win in Philadelphia but just sayin...

You slammed Rubio for saying this?

“He’s used it to enrich the lives of so many people whose names you will never know.”

Why is that wrong?

Remember, this is the New York Slimes. We should approach anything they write with skepticism and open eyes.

I’ve read the story about Marco’s sugardaddy several times. Sounds like he has a man-crush on him.

That’s the New York Slimes’ intent — to get you to abhor Republicans.

Robert Mercer has given over $11 million to Ted Cruz. Toby Neugebauer has given $10 million to Ted Cruz. The Wilks family of Texas has given $15 million to Ted Cruz.

Is it time to damn Cruz, since he’s also the recipient of donations from wealthy donors?

FReepers — let’s not buy into the anti-free-enterprise tactics and cynicism of progressives. We’re better than that. Sheesh.
