Kentucky clerk Kim Davis met privately with Pope Francis, Vatican confirms

Pope Francis met with Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis during the pope’s visit to the United States, the Vatican confirmed on Wednesday morning.

Rev. Manuel Dorantes, a spokesman for the Vatican, said to The Washington Post, “I do not deny that the meeting took place, but I have no comments to add.”

The meeting between Davis, who went to jail for six days after refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and the pope was announced late Tuesday by Liberty Counsel, a religious freedom nonprofit that is representing the elected Rowan County clerk in her ongoing legal struggles.

Liberty Counsel said in a news release that Davis and her husband, Joe, met privately with Francis at the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington last Thursday. The pair chatted about bravery, then hugged and exchanged promises of prayer, according to the news release.

The pope thanked Davis for her “courage,” according to the press release, and told her to “stay strong.” The news release also said Francis “presented Kim and Joe Davis each with a Rosary that he personally blessed.”

Mat Staver, Davis’s attorney and the founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, told the New York Times that photos of the meeting were expected soon from the Vatican. When asked why he delayed the announcement until now, Staver said: “We didn’t want the pope’s visit to be focused on Kim Davis.”

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Staver’s spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment to The Washington Post. The Archdiocese of Washington declined to comment on the matter.

The Nunciature is right across Massachusetts Ave from the US Naval Observatory, where the Vice President lives, right?

Maybe she was advised to wait until it was announced..but it took longer then expected and she jumped the shark.

They would have denied the meeting versus “no comment.”

True, but doing so does send a pretty powerful message.

Keep in mind that a large percentage of Democrats are probably Catholic.

Just about everything that the Pope said recently reinforced their Liberal beliefs and that made them happy. Then, along comes the rumor that the Pope met with Kim Davis. Of course, they will attack it. However, I dare them to call the Pope and the Bishops liars when the proof is provided.

Lets see if the Catholic church has the guts to stand up to the Left or maybe they’ll just fold like a card table.

IIRC her legal team just had to acknowlege that pictures they put out off a big rally in her support (in Peru, I think?) were a hoax.

Vatican confirmation of the meeting is a good thing.

The pope thanked Davis for her “courage,”

It may have been more courageous for him to have met with her her publicly.

Why would she have lied about this?

Deference to the Pope's wishes due to other considerations revolving around his visit?

I have not said too many kind things of the Pope of late, so good for the Pope, but why the secrecy?

He could have had a impact on the PP funding vote, the Pope could have told Catholics that supporting abortion gay marriage and the removal of God/Christ from classroom/public square is at the least inconsistent with being a Christian

I have been asking Popes for years to tell Catholics that wilfully voting for anti Christian issues may impact were they spend eternity.

If people will remember in the past, the evangelist Kathryn Kuhlman met with one of the Popes in Rome with lots of photos.

A certain “Hatched egg” publishing house tried to turn it into anti Cahtolic propaganda and claimed Kuhlman was a secret “catholic agent”.

My uncle is an Episcopalian reverend.

While in Rome he was granted an audience with the Pope.

He kissed the Pope’s ring.

In his defense it was JPII.

This is really curious.

It seems that the bland speeches could have been a public front while behind the scenes there were attempts to shore up the historical positions of the Catholic Church.

I’m not sure of the strategy. Perhaps it’s correct. As always, everything gets so nuanced that it’s virtually impossible to speak definitively.

Liberals don't mind when the Pope meets with prisoners, rapists, murderers... with every type of sexual deviant on the planet.

But to meet with a Christian conservative? Oh Lord, that can't be... the horror... the horror.

I would not read too much into it.

From my perspective the Pope saw this issue as a US specific political issue and kept the meeting secret, however, he went on and engaged in immigration as well as globull warming and that somehow is not political.

It is what it is....

IMO, the priorities are totally mixed up and remain so..
