Rep. Trey Gowdy's office said he's not leaving Congress next year, despite comments at a closed-door conference meeting on Tuesday that left many colleagues with the impression he was calling it quits.
The South Carolina Republican stood up in the room and gave an emotional speech, telling his colleagues he loved them all but that he would not be a candidate for leadership. Instead, Gowdy said he's staying focused on leading the committee investigating the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential front-runner, testifies before his panel next month.
When Im done with that, Im going to return to South Carolina where my heart is, Gowdy told his colleagues, according to a source in the room.
Many GOP lawmakers poured out of the Capitol meeting room, believing that Gowdy had just announced his retirement from Congress. In fact, Rep. John Fleming (R-La.) said on C-SPAN Wednesday morning that Gowdy told members he planned to retire.
Trey wants to go back to South Carolina, and God bless him for that, Fleming said on the program.
But others, including Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas), who was sitting in the first row at the meeting, said he did not interpret Gowdy's remarks as a farewell speech.
Asked if Gowdy was retiring from Congress, his spokeswoman Amanda Duvall, said: No, he is not announcing anything regarding 2016.

Gowdy is one of the few good guys in DC. He’s tough and doesn’t talk a lot of sh!t like Graham. SC needs him as our Senator.
Gowdy and Sen. Tim Scott could be a force to be reckoned with.
**Please, please, please**
We need Trey—Maybe in the Senate or as Trumps AG-— Maybe as Governor of SC? But, he still has to nail Hillary.
What are you talking about? The judge in the FOIA lawsuit has found the State Dept. has been not only withholding subpoenaed documents, but now they are discovering more docs from the FBI investigation that the State Dept. has never acknowledged until now.
Tell me who could do a better job, genius, given the obstructing and running interference of those Clinton drones planted at State?
All show. Nothing has changed.
Love the way you gamecocks stick together. So cute.
Gowdy’s a RINO who boasted he would shut down Steve King.

Rep. Steve King is defending his comments that children who were brought to the U.S. illegally dont deserve amnesty because theyre not all valedictorians despite a firestorm of criticism from Republican leaders and Democrats.
Speaker John A. Boehner called the comments wrong and his language hateful. Majority Leader Eric Cantor called them inexcusable. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., called the remarks reprehensible.
After the hearing, Gowdy, who chairs the Immigration and Border Security subcommittee, called Kings comments to Newsmax reprehensible.
Gowdy also took offense at Kings criticism during the hearing of the South Carolinians own comments about needing a permanent immigration law solution.
Did you hear his five minutes? Gowdy asked a scrum of reporters about Kings statement. He took one line from my opening statement about a remedy that lasts a lifetime and lectures me about the rule of law. I was a prosecutor for 15 years.
When asked how Republicans, particularly those in leadership, can reach out to members like King and implore them to keep inflamatory rhetoric at bay, Gowdy said flatly, You cant.
And while King has said he has the muscle to sink any piecemeal immigration bill, Gowdy scoffed.
The number of people who have a Steve King precise ideology on immigration isnt going to be sufficient to sink anything.
Low information poster.
I'm not a fan of college football or any college football team. I am not originally from SC, born and raised in Iowa. See my screenname and maybe, armed with some facts, you can get the total picture.
Trey is incapable of multitasking.
