Cruz makes it easy to ignore him though. He’s very soft spoken and enjoys lecturing on the Constitution. He just doesn’t have it in him to appeal to a broad audience.

So far as Cruz is concerned, one of the problems with the "debate" format is the lectern and fixed mike arrangement. Cruz doesn't use note and prefers, however, to move around the entire stage, with a wireless mike.
When he can be mobile, he becomes very animated and passionate.
I can appreciate his preference. Back when I was making presentations, that was my preference, as well.
Being chained to a fixed mike and a useless lectern really cramps his style.
