President Obama announced a new initiative Friday aimed at having 1 million American schoolchildren learn Mandarin Chinese over the next five years.
The commitment by Obama would see the number of American students learning Mandarin quintuple; 200,000 students across the country are studying Mandarin today. Obama framed the initiative as a chance for the countries to learn more about each other.
"If our two countries are going to do more together around the world, then speaking each other's languages so we can understand each other is a good start," Obama said.

Hate to say it but it makes some sense.
You know what they say about a blind squirrel.
I suspect it is required in all upper level education. English is the universal language of Commerce. We don't need to speak any other language. They need to learn ours.
Best to teach the kids Spanish. It will make it easier to get jobs and communicate with the news majority leaders.
Where Esperanto fails as the official language of the One World collectivists, Mandarin will suffice.
Incidentally, I always thought the foresight of a futuristic form of Mandarin Chinese to be in heavy use in the series Firefly, was completely believable, brilliant, in fact.

Some will need to learn Chinese. But, it sure as hell ain’t going to be me.
I think we all have that fear.
Yes-—it is to destroy all individuality and differences. That is Communism-—one way to think.
But, the real travesty is the time it takes to “learn” such an archaic system which destroys efficiency and has no connection to the Greatest literature and philosophy of all time.
There is a REASON that Western Civilization created Modern Science and the Age of Reason and the Renaissance and the US Declaration, Constitution and Federalist Papers—the most brilliant political documents in the history of man. Those concepts didn’t exist in the east at all.
Language and Words is what this is ALL ABOUT——He who controls the Words can control all the perceptions of the masses. Wasting time on Chinese takes away from the Great Books in Western Civ and the greatest philosophy, theology in the history of the World. Nothing in the East is equivalent to the creative, brilliant Western culture which created Individualism and Individual Natural Rights from God.
The Christian Ethics is unique and a Western concept and obama and the elites want it destroyed. What better way than to put children studying a culture which only had Christian as a minority.
Destroy true Christianity and high level of English which took years, and you create irrational, dumb tribal minds, and we will have compliant “group thinkers” who will only do what the state tells them to do.

I don’t know. But my Chinese immigrant friends work very hard on their English skills. They are so happy to be here. They are all Christians, I went with a Shanghai born gal for 15 years, and I regret not having her teach me Mandarin. Not an easy language to learn though.
So kids can say, “how much for one kidney?” in Chinese.
Try Number 7. It comes with egg rolls.
Judging by the Chinese grad students that I had for teacher's assistants in Engineering School, zero mastery of the English language is required.
Rather, I simply learned to design "Crows Cisterns" rather than Closed Systems.
