Trump threatens to 'break' trade pact with Mexico, Canada

Donald Trump is calling the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) a "disaster" and vowing to renegotiate or break the deal if elected president.

"It's a disaster," Trump told CBS's Scott Pelley in an interview airing Sunday on "60 Minutes." "We will either renegotiate it or we will break it because you know every agreement has an end. "Every agreement has to be fair. Every agreement has a defraud claim. We're being defrauded by all these countries," Trump continued.

Pressed on whether he supports free trade, Trump responded, "We need fair trade, not free trade. We need fair trade it's got to be fair."

I guess you could just treat it the way Zero treats the Iran “treaty” (i.e., as not a treaty).

My estimation of Mr. Trump just skyrocketed. He actually gets something that both the Democrats and the Republican leadership have ignored: that these trade treaties are gutting the American economy and hurting tens of millions of Americans.

Truthfully, what good does it do America if multinational corporations can sell on our markets, but pay no taxes, hire no Americans, keep American companies from developing, and push socialism on us to keep down their expenses?

What good does it do America if multinational corporations can outsource near slave labor to make products they import back to the US, firing millions of Americans in the process?

What good does it do America if multinational corporations import foreign high-tech workers and fire American high-tech workers, so they don’t have to pay benefits, promote the foreigners, or ever give them a raise, then discard them like used facial tissue and bring over a new bunch?

If it was just *one* of these things, America and Americans might be able to tolerate it. But as things are now, it is just ravaging and impoverishing our nation. And the Republican leadership is just as much to blame for this as are the Democrats.

But...but...but... cheap stuff at Wal-Mart!

Yes, and MASSIVE trade deficits, adding trillions of dollars to our national debt, and encouraging profligate spending by these politicians, who should be stripped of their wealth and forced to live naked on a desert island.

Pretty sure that NAFTA has a provision where any of the 3 countries can withdraw if they give 1 year’s notice.

No, it’s not a treaty, just a trade agreement.

trade deficits are between individuals and not sovereigns

national debt is not related to trade deficits

the national debt is the result of spending....... the significant deficit is between revenue and spending

NAFTA is a part of Agenda 21 / “Sustainable Development”. In the Preamble it lists “support Sustainable Development” as a Goal.

Trump is right on target and this is precisely why he is such a threat to the global Marxist cabal.

I've spoken to Canadian distributors who want nothing to do with NAFTA exemptions because it is too hard for them to prove that a product is "100% Made in the USA". If even the smallest part of any product is made elsewhere and the Canadian government finds out, they are ruthless in coming after the importers for back customs duties. Importers prefer to just buy from China at a lower price and pay the duties up front.

Just one of many ways NAFTA isn't working out as intended - like any huge, complex bill. A one-paragraph law reading "No duties on imports between North American countries" might have worked...but of course the looters would have been cut out of the deal.

I believe NAFTA requires a 12 month notice period if a signatory wants to get out. How that notice is decided upon is a domestic concern.

Yeah, well, Trump has played a part in that “emptying.” Buy a Donald Trump shirt some time. You’ll see that it was made in Bangladesh.

I remember many years ago, trade restrictions, which prevented us from exporting to other countries....things like...15 0z can is unacceptable. It was crazy stuff like that.

We've had a lot of policies which have been reversed.

For one thing, we should have separate trade agreements with Canada and Mexico. The countries are not comparable.

Or you could buy a hat from his site, which is made in America.

All my pants and shirts are from Egypt, Pakistan, Jordan....98% cotton, perfect fit, excellent workmanship and reasonable price. Can't get anything Made in the USA that can fit the bill.

I believe Trump's campaign stuff is ALL made in USA. I bet you can't say that of the other candidates.

frank luntz is a joseph gerbels of the neoconservatives. he is great at manipulating opinions using what I call group think. I watch him on fox news and his focus groups and I cringe because people actually buy into the people in these groups being a representative sample of peoples opinions not realizing that all he is doing is manipulating opinion on the subject.

These trade agreements have caused high unemployment among Americans.

If you have lots of people not working and depending on the Government guess what happens to the debt?

Also if companies setup shop in other countries then they are paying taxes to those countries and not the US. Drives up the debt even more.....

Mexico has a lower unemployment rate than the USA.

Of course, they have no EPA either.

Mexico is one filthy place.

I doubt Trump is a big union fan. Sometimes you don’t need to state the obvious.

Unions are on the decline. No need to stir up a hornet’s nest.

As for government regulations, he has said he wants to look at the EPA real hard to see if we can’t do without it.

He’s leaning in the right direction. He is aware of the regulation problems. I believe he addressed that in the Scott interview. I may be wrong, but he came very close when talking about us being more competitive.

I’m pretty sure I’ve heard him address the 100 or so regulations some businesses face, and wanting to pare that way back.

If I’m wrong, I apologize, but I believe I’ve hear him touch on this.

Hopefully, Trump has the best security his money can buy!

Big boys in this country, Mexico, China, et al are looking at ways to "remove" him from the pack running for President!

He'd best be looking around all sorts of corners, as those guys play very rough and the fact that he's threatening their bacon, ain't gonna go down well.

Can you imagine what would happen if he and others, were able to bring all those jobs back home?

Can you imagine what would happen in all those countries that exist by making our goods for pennies, then selling the, back to us for big dollars?
