That's a big part of his problem. His so-called condemnation of abortion and gay marriage was so vague that it could be - and mostly was - ignored by the secular press. Indeed, it was so tepid that some interpreted it as a de facto endorsement of those things, or at least an indication that those issues weren't particularly important to him.
