SHANGHAI: US aerospace giant Boeing has reached deals with Chinese firms to sell 300 aircraft and set up a completion centre in China, state media and its local partner said on Wednesday (, as President Xi Jinping began a visit to the United States.
The massive order, which was not immediately confirmed by Boeing, demonstrates the vital importance of the Chinese market despite a growth slowdown that threatens to slow the expansion of air travel.
The state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) also reached an agreement with Boeing to set up a "completion centre" in China for its narrow-body 737 airliners, Xinhua said.
It represents a step-up in Boeing's competition in China with European rival Airbus, which already has a manufacturing presence there.
The Xinhua report, datelined from Seattle where Xi on Tuesday started his first US state visit, gave no details of the models bought by a group of Chinese companies or the value of the sale.
Aviation analyst Shukor Yusof described it as the biggest ever order by a country.
Xi is due to visit Boeing's main aeroplane factory in Washington state on Wednesday.
"China's rapidly growing aviation market plays a crucial role in our current and future success," Boeing chairman Jim McNerney said in a statement last week.
COMAC confirmed to AFP that it will set up a joint venture with Boeing for interior completion, painting and other delivery support services for Chinese customers. "This shows cooperation between Boeing and a Chinese enterprise has been lifted to a major-manufacturer level," it said in a statement.
The wording echoes the "new model of major country relations" phrase that Chinese officials use to describe ties with the US, suggesting parity between the powers.

They can always buy a few of the latest models from Boeing and Airbus and continue the reverse engineering indefinitely. China's strategy is always to lure Western production facilities, then reverse engineer and copy until they can set up their own industries.
I can't think of too many corporations who wouldn't.
Airbus also set up an assembly line here.
yeah right....because building those 300 planes won’t create a single American job in Seattle or Charleston.....SHEESH........
And of course Boeing wants the Ex-Im bank to finance the deal..
Boeing currently has an order backlog of over 4,000 737s and currently builds 42 aircraft per month.
I think that American jobs in Seattle are safe.
Those 300 passenger planes will make excellent troop transports in the invasion of Taiwan, Japan, or South Korea.
I believe that they will only do interior work... nothing that has to do with flightworthiness.
...soon to be over 50 a month...
in other words, they WILL HAVE TO HIRE MORE.
Some people are impossible to please. I thought that’s what we wanted, more jobs. I didn’t know we wouldn’t want them if it also created a few jobs in China. Damn, I gotta get my head on straight.
That’s another issue......another issue completely.
Now I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but let me tell you what that statement above means IN THE CONTEXT of our conversation. It means that it's only okay to do business with China is we're saving current jobs, NOT creating new ones. I really don't think you mean that, but again, in the logical progression of our give and take, unless it means that, it means nothing.
I think a backlog of 4000 planes in Seattle and 3000 new on order means MANY NEW JOBS in Seattle and Charleston - and yes, in China too. Used to be conservatives understood win/win dealings. Seems we're being led by a man and a thought process that assumes a "loser" in every deal. That's not how economics works. Zero sum is dangerously close to liberalism.
300 not 3000.
Weeellll doggy; this is right in Trumps wheelhouse.
Grand slam anyone?
I’ll have the Condor eggs over-easy with toast and spotted owl fries please.....
yeah, my bad on the typo.....point is the same however.
This is the end of Americans building Boeing aircraft. Unless Trump can change it around, those Commie Chinese are going to produce 10 for the price of one and benefit from the Boeing quality of having the plant there.
Who besides Trump is attacking this?
That's ridiculous. If they could build ten for one, they'd be doing it now. They could get a hold of one plane and reverse engineer it - they don't need Boeing to build a "finishing plant" there.
Commie Chinese wouldn’t build a Boeing Plant if they didn’t need it. Reverse engineering must have factories. And those Chinese workers will be paid peanuts.
oh like they can’t reverse engineer a jet now...with an existing factory. Damn you’re streeeeeeeeeetching here.
They havn’t yet have they. But why not build a factory in the USA? Instead of one in the biggest Communist Country on Earth? Why employ communist instead of Americans? Build it here.
I hope President Trump changes their minds, one way or the other.
