I have a 2003 Jetta TDI that just had it’s air intake manifold cleaned out. Peppy family car, great for getting around in. Gets about 42 mpg.

They evidently ran a program that sensed the OBD2 port in use and defaulted to a cleaner tune.

I think most of us would want a high performance vehicle that passes smog tests.

To most people, cheating on a test is not the same as passing.

I have a higher opinion of VW since this came out.

Well, now's the time to buy, then. Of course, it won't pass a smog test...

Are you serious? Rigging their cars so they exceed the pollution standard by 40x whenever they are not getting tested for it?

Can I buy a non-compliant VW at a heavy discount now? IMHO, VW isn’t the real villain here.

Since diesel tends to cost a good bit more than gasoline, perhaps I could get an adapter kit and swap out the engine.

Why would you even consider doing that?

^^^^^This, plus dissing Obama on his CAFE standards. This is VALJAR payback. We are living in dark times.

I could care less what VW did. As far as I can tell particulate matter was not an issue. Only increased output of nitrogen oxide compounds which I don’t consider a big deal. I’ll bet these evil VW diesels put out the same level of nitrogen oxide as gasoline powered automobiles of 20 years ago

By that logic, it's okay to rob a bank if you don't get caught.

By the EPA's logic, it's okay to pollute a river with toxic chemicals if you're the EPA. LOL! :)

New VW diesel vehicles are locked down by the govt right now so the answer to that part is no.

Used VW diesel vehicles that are non-compliant are certainly available in the used market. I doubt many owners are willing to dump them for a "heavy discount" but Craigslist is your friend here.

I read about a case in the upper Midwest where the EPA blocked a dedicated mining road that went in a straight line 18 miles one way, slated for mining truck traffic only, in favor of the local Greenies' favored route, which ran 62 miles one way on a heavily-used local county road.

The Greenies and their EPA buddies apparently did this to get even with the mining company for being issued a mining permit over their objections. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT.

So, the EPA can stuff their sanctimonious lies right up their keester. And the families of anyone killed by the constant stream of large mine ore trucks on that road should look up the responsible EPA parties for "a little chat".

The Toyota Prius was built from the ground up to game the EPA’s mileage testing method. No Prius owner gets the official MPG in the real world.

I must have missed where the EPA said that was okay.

If VW is fined, all the money should be divided amongst the people who bought the cars not the government.
