Doctors Not Happy After Drug Goes From $13.50/Tablet To $750 Overnight

Gripe as we might, consumers understand that price increases do happen. What’s not as easily understood is how the price for something can go from $13.50 one day to $750 the next — especially when it’s a generic drug used to save lives.

For decades, Daraprim (pyrimethamine), an anti-parasitic used to treat malaria and toxoplasmosis, had been made by GlaxoSmithKline and sold for as little as $1/tablet until not that long ago. Then in 2010 GSK sold the drug to CorePharma, which began to raise the price. Within a year, revenue from Daraprim jumped nearly ten times even though the number of prescriptions written remained flat.

Then last month, a company called Turing Pharmaceuticals acquired the U.S. marketing rights to Daraprim and the retail price for the drug skyrocketed.

A great opportunity for another company to compete. If they can find a country that doesn’t make that too costly.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the FDA and cronyism was somehow involved in this price hike....

I wonder if there is a veterinarian alternative....

There are other drugs to treat those problems.

I hope they go bankrupt and his dog gets the runs....during his birthday celebration....just as he's ready to blow out the candles.

It’s been out long enough that if it actually could be produced cheaply there’d be generic equivalent. Since there isn’t one something about the supply chain must have gotten ugly.

Lawsuit settlements would be a possible factor.

82 bucks a bottle for horses,

Each ml of ReBalance Antiprotozoal Oral Suspension contains 250 mg sulfadiazine and 12.5 mg pyrimethamine. Give 4 ml per 110 lb

Probably a hell of a lot cheaper...

FU FDA....

Someone is about to make a killing (pardon the pun) when Obama’s muslim pals release a billion malarial mosquitos in the US. Winter is coming, but there’s still time.

I should have become a Veterinarian....

It is amazing how much cheaper veterinarian supplies are than humans supplies even though they come from the same assembly line / process...

Is CorePharma one of those companies that formed to take advantage of the billions of $$ Obamacare is dispensing to their cronies?? I personally know of an insurance company incorporated since ACA and raking in the big bucks for inferior service - probably many more doing the same.

So I had a skin doc recommend a new product for my dry patchy skin I get sometimes during the dry months. Ok fine. The previous stuff I got from time to time was about 50$. Gave the new stuff a shot. Had the pharmacy prepare the order, when to pick it up—400$!!! It WAS 800$, but with discount... Tried it one time, works no better than the 50$ stuff. Pharmacy said they would no longer fill that prescription. Neither will I use it. Sheesh.

My husband got a new kind of insulin pen. Three pens to a box costs $450. With insurance it is $50. He likes the old one better. The old one was expensive but not that bad.

This is what happens when government gets involved in health insurance. Anytime anything is paid for by a third party, the price skyrockets. When you have to buy it yourself, the end user is more price sensitive.

I’m willing to bet that Turing Pharmaceuticals made a sizable contribution to the DNC.
