Kids with cancer and their parents ejected from park near White House
Washington Post ^ | September 21 | Fredrick Kunkle

The U.S. Secret Service ordered hundreds of parents and their cancer-stricken children out of Lafayette Square on Saturday night, barricading the park for at least two hours and disrupting the group’s plans for a candlelight vigil to raise awareness of and research funding for childhood cancer, participants said.

Some of the parents and children expressed hurt and disappointment that the Secret Service and Park Police, citing security precautions, virtually shut down part of a two-day event called CureFest for Childhood Cancer.

“We ended up waiting at the gates for two hours, and they never let us in,” said Natasha Gould, an 11-year-old from Canada who started a blog after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor this year. “And to be clear, the entire crowd was half kids. I cried last night in my hotel room because it was my first CureFest, and I couldn’t believe people were acting like they don’t care about children.”

But as the closure continued on, some of the sick children, fatigued by the wait or the need to receive medication, had to return to their hotel rooms, organizers said. Others began crying, and some parents became enraged. Attendees said the group of at least 700 people was not allowed access to personal items they left behind, such as chairs and blankets.

Should have carried rainbow flags. They would have opened the White House for them.

"If they were sick Muslim children, they would have been ushered right into the WH to meet the Imam-in-Chief."

You got that right - and Obama would propose some new tax to fund their treatment...

Good for the Secret Service. They have shown the world they are 100% ready and able to protect the president from a small group of cancer-stricken children.

Their reputation has been rehabilitated. This is a real feather in their cap...

It was because the president had exited the white house at that end of the building on his way to speak to the congressional black caucus.

Good news Secret Service and Park Police.

Some of these kids won’t be remembering your crass behavior for very long.

Shame you couldn’t have thought of that in real time.

For many people going to Washington, D. C. is a once or even a few times in life event. You travel all the way there, and pack in what you can while you’re there.

Here are kids trying to participate in the process, and this is at least part of their exposure to Washington, D.C.

I don’t always go bonkers on efforts for kids, but this is one that should have been treated better. 700 people’s efforts are a lot of efforts to just smack down.

“For the FedGov commies, I pray for bad cess.”

Prayer is powerful, but I think that God wants us to do more.

Why else was the story of Jesus and the money changers in the temple given to us?

Was there a tee time after the CBC event?

Here's another thread. See Xzins's post #2 above about the Empire State Building, too.

[Remember when they shut vets out of national parks, but let the illegals hold a rally...]

I remember the Park Service set up barricades around the World War II Memorial to block entrance to 80-year-old veterans who had traveled from around the country to see the site. A crowd of veterans finally removed the barricades and poured into the Memorial grounds.

This is terrible, Xzins. There’s no excuse for the way these children and their families have been treated.

I don’t understand it, either. Why would the WH and the Empire State Building light up rainbow colors, but not gold for childhood cancer?

The Empire State Building is inexplicable. There is absolutely no way I can understand their reasoning other than ‘it’s their building and they don’t want to.’

The Secret Service has saved the president from a bunch of little kids with cancer. They might have posed a real threat. /sarc.
