A long time ago, wearing American flags as a shirt or pants was considered disrespectful.

Look at the photo. This was not an American Flag. It was a symbolic representation of the American Flag.

I can see if the entire shirt were the American flag, but just a design, no.

Yes - not that long ago it would have been considered disrespectful to represent the flag on an article of clothing. And the only shirts allowed in school would have had a collar, buttons and been tucked in.
