All-Women’s College Offers Students 10 Pronoun Options, With Option to Never Be Called A Pronoun
National Review ^ | 09/20/2015 | Katherine Timpf

Scripps College, a private all-women’s college in Southern California, is giving students ten pronoun options to choose from in their student portal accounts — including “hu, hum, hus, himself,” “Just My Name Please,” and “None”

It’s not clear what the hell students who choose “None” are supposed to be called, especially since “Name Only” is another option. Are they (oops! I said “they!”) asking to not be spoken to at all? Because that sounds like a microaggression.

The other eight options are “E/Ey, Em, Eir/Eirs, Eirself/Emse,” “Per, Per, Per/Pers, Perself,” “Zi, Hir/Hirs Hirself,” “Ze, Zir, Zir/Zirs, Zirself,” “They, Them, Their/Theirs, Themse” (used as a singular pronoun) and — yes — the archaic “He, Him, His, Himself” or “Her, She, Hers, Herself.”

This list of pronouns, as well as a pronunciation guide for those insensitive bigots who don’t already know them by heart, was provided to the College Fix.

The students’ selections are given to professors. It’s not clear what kind of hell a professor might have to endure for accidentally using the wrong one — but it could be serious, especially considering that at least one student considers the options to be necessary protection from “institutionalized violence.” Yes — “violence”:

“One’s gender identity should not be something that causes them anxiety in their everyday lives,” junior Rachel Neuberg told The Student Life, the official college newspaper for the affiliated Claremont and Pomona Colleges.

“I hope that Scripps will continue to create a safe and comfortable place for its students, and that other colleges will take note so we can all work together to stop institutionalized violence,” she continued.

There is, however, an obvious problem with this system: What about the gender-fluid students who may change genders and pronouns throughout the year, or even perhaps throughout the day? I can’t imagine how traumatic (dangerous?) being pressured to choose just one might be.

I guess you could always use the military method of using a descriptive title and last name (like “Recruit Jones” or “Trainee Smith”) . Multiple same last names? Then just add a number after the name. Such as, Recruit Jones 2 or Trainee Smith 3. In this case, the appropriate term would be student. No confusion as to who’s being addressed and no pronoun implying gender.

In fact, use of third person references might be desirable between the students as well to prevent inadvertent micro aggressions. For example, when asking for a date, the conversation might go thusly: “Student Smith, would you like to go out on a date with me tonight? Why no, Student Jones, I have to study for a physics exam tomorrow.” Or, when commenting on athletic prowess, “that student can certainly run fast.”

Such an approach would not require the savaging of the English language and, more importantly, would not require participating parties to remember the 10+ different pronouns that are currently being proposed in academia.

yes, but I tell them that this is from a new politically correct study from a university, most of the time they adopt my practice on that basis.

They declare me enlightened and walk on.

How will these poor delicate darlings ever survive when they go out into the world of commerce and their boss refers to them using “her” or “she” or even the dreaded “Miss”. They’ll have to do what most liberals do. Start taking anti-depressants.

These are adult women. They are filling their own minds with mush. Don’t let them get off the hook on the “young minds” defense.

It is well past time we start holding people accountable from about age 15 or so. None of our grandparents put up with this kind of stuff. They were sensible and responsible (or else paid the consequences if they were not).

After all, calling someone “Cindy” implies gender.

And nowadays, calling somebody Caitlyn does not.

Hmmmm. "It" was a joke based on Cousin It's hirsuteness.

Still, I'm glad you gave it the dignity of an answer, I'm definitely going to use that 'this is from a new politically correct study from a university' line!

God forbid anyone have to deal with “anxiety in their everyday lives”

There needs to be a general boycott on hiring anyone from these nutty colleges

Exactly. I have people in my family like that (take offense at every little thing). Everyone avoids them as much as possible, and we notice they don’t have m/any friends and have a hard time holding down a job.

There is no reason to coddle such people. Coddling is how they got like that in the first place in most cases.

Next to ebonics and spanish, this is now the third language Americans are being required to learn. Will English ever make the list?

Amen to that!! This is indicative of too much wealth, too much free time, too many people not having to suffer to keep the wolf away from the door, too many idle people with the ridiculous luxury of not having to take life seriously. This is going to get a lot worse in the next 100 years as robots take away more and more productive, life-affirming work and the idle classes will have more time to dream upmcrap like this.

In 1969, the Universitynof Missouri assigned me 154945 and for four years thereafter, that’s how I was known. Let’s just cut to that.

I know that it’s hard to believe, but there was a time that the more intelligent people could be found on college campuses. You’ll just have to trust me on this.
